One of our dogs is acting like he’s trying to cough up something. Nothing comes up. He ate breakfast normally, but he didn’t eat dinner. We’re worried. He acts like a cat trying to cough up a fur ball.
He spent the last few days being boarded at the vet with our other dog, who is fine.

We can't diagnose your dog over the internet. I can think of 3 things off the top of my head. He could have something lodged in his throat. He could have caught kennel cough while boarded. It could be reverse sneezes. Or it could be something totally different. There is no way for me to tell with rather vague description. Go to a vet.

That sounds like kennel cough, but you need to see the vet.

Who knows without being a vet. But, unless the behavior changes for the better, I think you should see a vet.

It sounds like bordatella (kennel cough), but I can’t imagine a boarding place, especially a vet, allowing you to board your dog w/o a bordatella vaccination.

I don’t mean to alarm you, but what you describe is often a symptom of congestive heart failure in dogs, but the onset isn’t usually acute.

Could he have gotten hold of a chicken bone or other small bone fragment?

Really, go to a vet.

He had a bad night, so we’ll be at the vet as soon as they open. Worried.
He was boarded at the veterinarian boarding facility and all dogs are up to date on everything.
He is not one who eats strange stuff that he finds, and he isn’t given bones.

Unfortunately, the dog died before we could get him to the vet this morning. They are doing an autopsy now, so we await news. The vet surmises a heart problem, or a blood clot. I’ll repost after we find out.

Very sorry to hear that. Sounds heart related. Was he up to date on heartworm shots?

Yes, up to date on everything, and had just had his annual checkup a month ago.
He was a willful little mutt dachshund from foster, who we loved for the three years we had him, so we are sad, but happy we made his short life a happy one.
