In your mind, is crating a dog for 9 hours/day more or less cruel than not adopting the dog and having it put down by a shelter? Because that is only alternative in many scenarios.
Why are those the only two options? Training a dog or cat is not that difficult. It only takes a little bit of effort on your part.
I have one with such a strong prey drive that I can not hold on to him.
I just think some people give up too easily. I realize that some are more difficult to train, but there are other options that don't require being holed up all day.

Yeah, that's it... it's always the owner's fault, never the animal's. There are dogs that cannot be trained as easily, or at all, as other dogs.
I have never used a crate/cage for a puppy or adult dog. However after reading several threads regards crates/cages I would now crate train my next puppy. It would mean the puppy could stay in our bedroom through the night I would be on hand to take the puppy out of the crate to toilet. The puppy would feel secure as he would be with us thereby reducing his vocal anxiety.
Crates are very useful for an injured dog that has to be immobilised.
I agree with others crates/cages are only cruel if they are misused.

It's the owner's fault if they don't try other options. I didn't say every pet is easy to train. I'm a firm believer that if you adopt a pet, it is your responsibility to try to give them the best possible life.
Where in that quote did I say that? I'm talking about the people who just give up or don't even bother trying.
Sorry, I must have misread your post. I thought you were making the insinuation that with training, every dog breed is capable of being left alone without destroying something.

The implication may have been that specific breeds, or at least specific dogs, or perhaps dogs of specific people...
In short though... dogs which can't be relied upon to be left alone... SHOULDN'T be left alone.
And NO, crating them for the 8-10 or more hours of a typical work & commute day is not the solution.
It's certainly not a solution for the dog.
