And nothing about this story was ever heard again ...
OK, since you mentioned it and bumped the thread, I looked up the perp +Santa Clara County, where he was last said to be held in jail. Interesting results. Dr. Patel has been in Santa Clara County court before.

1. A 1 lane hwy each direction; vehicle veers into Tesla's lane at 50+mph. There's no time for the Tesla to react. All drivers and passengers killed. Have to hope the oncoming driver is not texting, looking at smartphone or inebriated.
Once a Tesla can avoid this scenario it will deserve the hype. Until then nobody should buy a car based off a spouse becoming suicidal near a cliff.
Here's a few more among the many. Don't get me wrong. Of course Tesla's are safe, likely the safest car from driving tests, but anyone can make a fatal driving mistake.

If it had been pretty much any other car, the story would not mention the car maker.
They're investigating a possible issue with car.
"Prosecutors who are investigating whether the driver of a Tesla intentionally crashed the car three weeks ago off the side of Highway 1, nearly killing his family members, are now also exploring whether mechanical problems could have caused the incident, the San Mateo County district attorney told The Times.
Prosecutors are still in the early stages of the investigation, Dist. Atty. Steve Wagstaffe said."
Why would the car choose that exact section of road, where there's no guardrail, to experience mechanical problems? Let's see how long this potential alibi lasts.

Strange. Why would they be so certain he did it on purpose, and then go back on that?
(I never heard enough to find out why they thought it was intentional in the first place-- did he confess? Did one of the other family members tell them so?)

The driver of a car that plunged 250 feet (76 meters) off a treacherous cliff in northern California, injuring his two young children and his wife, was released from the hospital and jailed on suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse, authorities said Friday.
Patel was later arrested after California Highway Patrol investigators “developed probable cause to believe this incident was an intentional act,” the agency said.
However, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe this week said that investigators are also examining the Tesla Model Y to rule out the possibility of a mechanical problem.
“Did the brakes fail? Were the brakes working? Were there any other mechanical malfunctions that would have led to him not being able to stop the vehicle?,” Wagstaffe told the Los Angeles Times. “We’re having the car looked at from top to bottom.”
