Dublin replacing high-waste streetlights with 1,500 LEDs. The city will spend about $2 million next year on the project.

Dublin going green along streets in long-term bid to save money - Columbus - Business First

Columbus will soon have a new racetrack, auto research center, along with hotels and restaurants at the site of old Cooper Stadium just south of I-70 on the near West Side. Final approvals are now complete and construction should be moving forward soon. Columbus will be the only city in Ohio to have something like this.

Project Details
Construction Start: 2012
Construction End: 2013?
Projected Cost: $40-$50 million

Zoning board OKs auto racing at Cooper Stadium site | The Columbus Dispatch

There seems to be quite a bit of criticism for this art piece. I myself don't find it all that appealing other than the size and location. Still, I like that the city is thinking more about public art because we certainly need more of it.

Proposed Scioto Mile sculpture highlights city

County officials OK Darby development | The Columbus Dispatch

This looks like a huge development and one of the largest that side of the city has seen in quite a while. I like how, even though it is suburban development, it will be built not as chaotic sprawl, but as an organized "town center" style development that leaves tons of greenspace and has more of an urban layout. Hopefully all environmental concerns will be addressed as the Big Darby is a true gem of Central Ohio.

69 apartments and 10 condos proposed to be built along 3rd and Dennison in Victorian Village.

German Village leaders meet Wednesday to discuss 3rd street plans | The Columbus Dispatch

I would love to see 3rd Street bricked over. As the main street of German Village, doing so in conjunction with other improvements, would definitely add character to one of Columbus' best neighborhoods.

Franklinton takes bold strokes to renew neighborhood | The Columbus Dispatch

Some great ideas and progress happening in East Franklinton now. Franklinton is one of the most blighted neighborhoods of Columbus, and its proximinity to Downtown is a big selling point. The neighborhood has gone through rough times for decades. It was severely flooded in 1913 and 1959, and had minor floods several other times. There was actually a federal law in place that no new development could happen in the neighborhood because of the flooding issue. This was not lifted until after 2004, when the Franklinton Floodwall was completed. Momentum to revitalize the area is starting to finally take off.

Also, in the 2010 city development plan, part of the wish list is to develop a huge residential/commercial/retail development just behind COSI, which is directly across the river from Downtown.

Wood Companies New Short North Apartments Going Skyward

Another one of Columbus' premier neighborhoods, the Short North, continues to develop. This project is adding 3 floors to an existing building and will add 24 new residential units that will be ready in 2012.

Casino To Bring More Than 2,000 Jobs To Columbus | WBNS-10TV

Like Toledo, Cleveland and Cincinnati, the vote to allow casinos in Ohio also includes one being built in Columbus. It will be one of Penn National's largest casinos in the country, and the $400 million dollar project on the West Side is expected to bring thousands of jobs. There are also future plans, depending on how successful the casino is, to add future hotels on the site.

The Hubbard Apartments to Rise Over The Short North

The most high-profile project in the Short North right now is The Hubbard. The site was originally supposed to be called Ibiza and be built in 2007. When the economy crashed, financing fell through and the project was eventually scrapped after years of delays. The site eventually went into bankruptcy. Now that it is all ending, another company has stepped in and will be building on the site. The project will include 68 residential units along with 4 condos and a 250 space garage.

As for yourself, jbcmh81, what do you feel was the most significant single urban-development in Columbus in 2011? (and why?)

That's a tough one, but I think the one that will end up having the most lasting impact are the twin parks completed Downtown this year. Both were done by summer, and afterwards, the Downtown saw at least a dozen new restaurants move in, a grocery store, bars and several residential projects announced, and much more interest in the overall area. One of Columbus' greatest weaknesses, imo, has been the Downtown area. It had been on a steady decline for years, and then put into only a temporary holding pattern at best when City Center was at its peak. The huge uptick in development interest Downtown has continued to drop not only residential vacancy rates, but commercial as well. Residential vacancy is less than 3% now. And the immediate Downtown is not the only area benefitting, as spur interest and develpment has risen in urban core neighborhoods adjacent to Downtown, such as Franklinton, OTE, Milo Grogan, King-Lincoln and has even reestablished the Brewery District as a place for development, which lost a lot of momentum when the Arena District was built. I think in a few short years, Columbus' Downtown is going to be a very different place.

^Thanks, jbcmh81. The big drop in residential vacancy rates bodes well for both the Columbus Downtown and its urban core neighborhoods!

Yes it does. I think by the time I get back from Mexico (leaving for there in January), it will be a much different place. Now if we can get some decent mass transit, even better.

Moody Nolan Imagines New Office Tower for Columbus Monthly « Columbus Underground Messageboard

A new Downtown tower and other developments are imagined for the area in the not-too-distant future. Most of this was approved in the 2010 Downtown development plan, so things like the Broad Street rework will happen by 2020.

The 2010 plan was the next version of the 2002 plan. The 2002 version included the Scioto Mile, RiverSouth redevelopment, 10,000 new residential units Downtown, etc, so these plans tend to include priority wish-list projects and they likely will move forward at some point. The new office tower was not on the 2010 plan, however, so we'll see if it will ever be more than fantasy.
