Hi, I'm new to Columbia and so far I'm loving it. I'm just a little confused by all the different neighborhoods...when there's not an obvious "Welcome to Rosewood" sign, they seem to all blend into one another (hence, the question in my title). I live near the intersection of Saluda and Wheat, but I was corrected by a local when I mentioned I lived in 5 Points. I understand that 5 Points is known as a commercial district, but I don't know what else to call the area I live in! It's not Shandon, I'm fairly certain.
Anyway, if anyone knows of a kind of neighborhood "map," or if anyone would like to tell me the boundaries of all the Columbia neighborhoods, I'd really appreciate it!
You either live in Wales Garden or in Wheeler Hill. I used to live on Waccamaw Avenue and that was Wales Garden. I usually consider Wales Garden to be the area from Wheat to Heyward and Waccamaw to Pickens, excluding Wheeler Hill.
Yeah the in-town neighborhoods can be tricky. If you said you lived in Five Points, you would actually be IN Five Points. Thats the only place thats like that in Columbia.
I agree with waccamatt. I'd say you live in Wales Garden. Wheeler Hill starts west of Saluda, and is north of Heyward- so you're right on the edge between the two.
Shandon starts at Harden.
I've seen a map before. It was one of those interactive maps that you can click around and see what is where. You might want to look on the city's website or Richland County GIS (richlandmaps.com). They might have it there.
Okay, thanks y'all...I think I basically have it figured out, though I wasn't able to find the map you mentioned (though I was able to find a really cool one at columbiacvb.com that was kind of interactive).
So, if Wales Garden "ends" more or less at Wheat, what is that little area from Wheat to Blossom, where Five Points begins? Is that the Wheeler Hill area you're talking about?
If I'm less than a block from Five Points proper I'd say I live in Five Points; at least people would know where you're talking about. Wheeler Hill is that little development on the north side of Wheat Street around Henderson before you get to Pickens. It is mostly houses with courtyards and townhouses and is basically surrounded by Wales Garden. I have pictures of both neighborhoods on my website.
Yahoo maps has neighborhoods on it, but they are incorrect. Mapquest doesn't have neighborhoods listed. The link below has a list of the neighborhoods that have an association, but not every neighborhood has one.

I am moving to Columbia in two weeks and need a rental. I need a place near 1400 Browning road. Any Suggestions would be appreciated. This move came up suddenly.

I wouldn't want to live near to that area due to noise, traffic, and some crime. You could live a decent distance away and still have an OK commute. Places like Springdale and Cayce are nice, or you could go further out towards Lexington, and still not have to use the interstate to get to work (I-20/I-26 interchange can be bad during rush hour).
