I'm interested in driving to Colorado and spending some time "near the mountains" in September or October. Specifically some kind of cabin/airbnb to stay in. Would be nice if it was near a creek or some kind of water for ambience. While I like "remoteness" would not want to be too far away from a hospital/pharmacy etc. in case of a Covid infection while there.

I've spent time in Breckenridge and Vail and really enjoyed it, but both times I flew into Denver then drove there.

Are there any other good cities similar to those, but perhaps closer, if driving from Dallas, TX?

TIA.

Probably Pagosa Springs. That seems to be where all the Texans have their second homes.

If driving from Dallas it won't make much difference where you end up; an hour or two difference between various places isn't too big an issue after the long drive from Dallas.

Towns like Vail and Breckenridge are major resort areas, similar areas are Aspen and Telluride, both are $$$$, but a longer drive. Lesser areas would be more reasonable.

You may want to expand your list to Colorado Springs, Woodland Park, Buena Vista, Salida, Canon City and places along the rte 50 corridor like Monarch Pass.

Further south there's Alamosa which has the Rio Grande River running through town and is nicely scenic.

Google any city and look at the images to get a flavor of what's available.

Lots to choose from, hard to go wrong most anywhere.

The Durango/Silverton/Telluride/Ouray area is my favorite in the state. No freeways near by, and Denver is 6 hrs or so away, so crowds are much smaller.

Would Pueblo work? I know there is a nice river front area downtown but not sure about the recreational opportunities. It saves a few hours of driving from CoS or Breck.

All of these have varying amounts of difficulty in getting to them, but some of my favorite towns in the state are: Telluride and Crested Butte followed by Ouray and Aspen.

Ouray for sure. Less crowding than others, the river right here through the valley, 26 miles to the fine hospital in Montrose.
