Looks like it is possibility new owners to locate Western & Southern Open to Charlotte. Is it a negotiation to get Cinci to help expand the tournament? Things seem to be moving along in Charlotte to give owners what they want.

Mason can't compete with Charlotte and it doesn't seem like Cincinnati is going to build another stadium...I think this quote about sums it up:

Quote:
Mason often confounded visiting players, especially those from foreign shores. They were shocked that there was no real city in the city of nearly 19 square miles, nor very much of interest to them amid a mix of cornfields, subdivisions, highway cloverleafs and drive-through restaurants. Anyone hoping to grab dinner near the tournament hotel after 9 p.m. had just one choice: a Waffle House sitting forlorn on a large expanse of empty parking lot. As one source for this story said, “Cincinnati is sleepy. Mason is really sleepy.”
While Cincinnati proper is far from sleepy, Mason certainly is being a bedroom community and all. So It's a rap.

When the wives of uber-fans are involved, the venue must include the following, in this order:

1) Shopping! This means shopping like they're used-to, of which there is very little outside of Chicago in the Midwest;
2) Restaurants! This means ones that are at least acceptable to them and have not already been booked by locals; and,
3) Any number of other really cool things to do, environments in which to take selfies, etc., etc.

The Western & Southern Open is principally about tennis at a time when sporting events (generally regardless of the sport) are too frequently the backdrop to a host of other activities in which ticket-holders and those with them may wish to participate.

The world changes, and time marches on. What impresses me the most is that our region has held on to a Masters 1000 tournament for this long. Full marks to all those who have made this happen!

Agreed. Good points you mentioned as well...personally, I would want some top notch amenities if I was going to travel to spectate a sporting event of any type. Even the times Ive been to pittsburgh for steelers vs Bengals games has been a several day affair where I take in all Pittsburgh has to offer...so if I were to travel to Mason...then yeah....I live 20 minutes from Mason and never go there...so ya...

I hate to see the tournament go but Cincinnati has done well building out their professional soccer team and what that means to Over the Rhine and the Westend. So..Im good with it all really.

The W&S does provide an annual economic boost to the entire region. http://https://www.journal-news.com/ohio/western-southern-tennis-tournaments-potential-move-will-have-economic-impact/CCUXCLW2JFAKXK34MXO5YZQVI4/

I'm glad I was able to attend a match in '21. it had been decades since doing so, and it may be the last. I wish Ohio was more progressive and forward thinking when it came to holding on to assets like this. The Carolina's, Texas and Georgia continue to eat our lunch.

Big time...this is the second big L that I am aware of..Chiquita moved to Charlotte (I hate the company but still) and now this tournament. Ohio sucks when it comes to competing with other communities, such as the ones you mentioned.

How much shopping do they need LOL?
Let's see within very reasonable distance of the tennis stadium, you got:

Voice of America Center (6 miles)
Arbor Square (7 miles)
Deerfield Towne Center (7 miles)
Liberty Center outdoor mall (8 miles)
Traders World (10 miles)
Cincinnati Premium Outlet Mall (10 miles)
Kenwood Mall (14 miles)
Bridgewater Falls (15 miles)

Not to mention Kings Island and Great Wolf Lodge if they "need something to do"

If anything there is TOO MUCH shopping around these parts. And let's not get started on the laundry list of restaurants....

Mason and West Chester area were voted as #5 and #13 best places to live for families in the US. People really need to leave their hotel when they come to town lol.....

As far as I know the tourney is always sold out. Will the players and fans like the humidity and heat of Charlotte? I have never attended. It was just not my cup of tea. The region will still have it for another 3 years. Just try to make a new venue with some of the same players that came to this event yearly.
