For sure, it's not close when comparing the homes. I think Naperville is at the long end of the OP's commute preferences and would be a pain for their preference to have not bad drives to Skokie though.

I'm in a slightly updated split level in Naperville, but it would probably sell for about $100k-$150k more in Elmhurst.

I've made friends everywhere I live, curious, in your opinion, how difficult is it to meet friends in Naperville? I have a child so could be helpful?

It could be relatively easy with just a slight bit of effort. Probably helps that you have a kid. I private messaged you a more thorough answer to avoid hijacking the thread.

Is there anything similar to Naperville, price, demographics, safety, etc but closer in? Looking for some diversity, friendly neighbors good schools etc
Downers Grove, Elmhurst, and LaGrange come to mind!

These are all a higher price point for a similar house than Naperville.

Wheaton or Glen Ellyn. They check all the boxes. And are way better than many places others have mentioned.

I would be cautious with both of these for their desired commute downtown, commute to Skokie, and if the OP can find a 4 br/3ba in their price point. They are both great towns otherwise. Wheaton will probably have a lot of 4br/2.5 ba available, but hard to imagine a door to door commute under 70 minutes.

Thousands take the train from Wheaton every day. The good news is you always get a seat, not the case further east, although its a shorter commute. Check out the parking situation in each town. Some have long waiting lists for train parking, and no day to day spaces available. There is no quick and easy way to get to Skokie from the western suburbs. I know, I moved from a house in Skokie to Wheaton and have rarely even made it back there.
