Will say there are differences among self checkouts. At Whole Foods it is always quick because the machines are designed for minimal fuss and rapid check out. At the regular supermarket (Giant) the machine makes you jump through too many hoops before processing the final bill. I do notice things like that.
Some people are slow at self checkout. But on the while it is fast and reliable. Rarely face a cashier these days.

I had a different situation the other day at Walmart. I picked up a prescription and they want you to pay for it in the pharmacy. At the self checkout, I tossed the prescription into one of my bags. The self checkout didn't like that and shut the checkout down and called for a Walmart associate. The self checkout knew that I didn't scan the prescription because I had already paid for it. The associate came over and ran the video of me throwing the prescription into one of my bags. I was glad I hadn't made a mistake.

Having the self-checkout falsely accuse you of shoplifting is a serious deterrent to using the self-checkout.
I'm one of those people that takes forever going through the self-checkout line. The other day I went through there and ended up paying twice for a little plant because the machine didn't like it that I set the plant to the side and kept ordering me to put in the bag with the other stuff. I didn't want to because I didn't want my plant to break, so it just kept beeping until I put it in the bag and then somehow it ended up charging me $8.00 twice. I didn't check the recipt until I got home.
I prefer self checkout. I like to bag my own groceries so I can keep items together that will be stored in the same place and keep meat separate from other items.
Agreed, I also like it the lines are faster and unless your a complete idiot, it's not hard to figure out. If you hate it, wait in line behind the lady with 200 items in her cart in the 20 items or less checkout line, then she can't find her wallet or has a complaint about something rung up for more that they thought the sales price was. No thanks.

Not saying everyone prefers self-checkout - but if that is their only data point, it hardly indicates people "don't like" self-checkout. Or that they prefer cashiers over self-checkout.
As if using cashiers don't have their own issues...
I rather checkout myself. And most of my issues are resolved with a quick swipe of the attendants badge to override or cancel the last item. That said - it's about getting in/out the fastest. I'll use the shortest line - be it automated or manned. It just happens that the automated lines are often shorter/quicker. Especially at places like Costco.
Many people doin't like self-checkout because many people simply can't handle a change to something new.
I like self-checkout because the line is usually shorter. If I have a lot of items, especially with PLUs, I'll often go with a cashier as that will then often be faster. And I'm not someone who loves new technology, but I'm also not someone who is obstinately opposed to it. The world changes. Better to change with it than to fuss and get nowhere.

Some of the lines are nearly impossible to figure out with your own bag. I’ve had situations where I had to call a helper no fewer than 3 times because it told me to remove unauthorized item from the bagging area even after I told it I had my own bags. Even with Whole Foods, which is designed to be easier, it is still frustrating because I haven’t found a way to actually use the code in prime to pay even after scanning it already. Someone told me you have to tell the cashier separately to process it, and I don’t know if it is possible to process it on your own.
