Results from Tuesday:
Dodgers and Rockies split a double header in Colorado, Reds beat the Guardians, Orioles beat the Nats, Phillies walked off the Pirates, Jays were shut out by the Yankees, Rays beat the Red Sox, Braves came back from down 6-0 to walk off the Cubs, Twins beat the A's, D'Backs beat the White Sox, Brewers lose to the Cards but win the division after the Cubs lost, and the Marlins and Mets were postponed due to unplayable field conditions due to the tropical storm that hit the east coast this weekend and will play a double header on Wednesday. In the late night games, the Rangers lose to the Angels, the Giants were shut out by the Padres, and the Astros lost to the Mariners.

Mariners & Astros elimination number is at 3 in the division
Rays divisional elimination number is now at 3
And the NL Central race is officially over as the Brewers won the division. So, the only 2 divisional races still on going is the AL West & AL East.

Since the Cubs lost, the only team that lowered their magic number is the Giants while the Marlins elimination number remains at 6, the Reds remains at 4, and the Padres & Giants now both have an elimination number of 1 which sets up an actual elimination game between the Padres & Giants in the series & season finale on Wednesday night. Of course, if the Cubs beat the Braves earlier in the day on Wednesday then both teams will be eliminated, but if the Braves win, then it really is like a game 7; winner remains on life support, loser is officially out.
The Mariners are the only team still on the AL Wildcard race, and their elimination number remains at 5

In the AL home field race, the Rangers still have a magic number of 3 for the second bye.
In the NL home field race, the Braves have a magic number of 2 for home field throughout the NL playoffs, and the Phillies (who clinched a Wildcard berth) have a magic number of 1 for the Top wildcard.

In the overall home field, the Braves have a magic number of 3 for homefield throughout the entirety of the playoffs. The Brewers, who have clinched the NL Central division, and since they cannot catch the Dodgers for second place, they are locked in as the 3 seed no matter what they or the Dodgers do the rest of the way will be off the page until the final day when I do the official bracket & seedings.

As I predicted previously in this thread, the Mariners tanked in the end, again. There is very little chance of them getting the last wildcard spot, after being in first place in the division just a few weeks ago. I really don't think management cares that much, as long as they are making money. I passed by the stadium yesterday on the way home from work and the stadium parking garage price was $70.

The Mariners.. The ones who are half a game back of the final WC spot with 4 games to play? The ones who are 3 games back of the division lead with 4 games against the division leader to go?

Technically, they have 5 games to play. And all 5 games against their opponents for the WC or the division.

You need at least 2 days before this call can be considered.. While Texas has a pretty firm grasp of the division.. Houston still has a 3 game series against Arizona, who are fighting for the playoffs as well

Mariners win tonight they go into the final series of the year in a playoff spot.
If the Mariners win tonight, AND they sweep the Rangers this weekend they win the division and likely get a bye.
Even if they lose tonight if they can sweep the Rangers they have a good chance at the playoffs.
Even if they lose tonight, if they can manage 3 out of 4 this weekend they still have a shot at the playoffs.

So I wouldn't say they have very little chance, I'd say they have a good chance even with how bad this month has gone for them.

Wednesday results:

Arizona beat the South Siders, Marlins lost the first game of the double header before rebounding to win the night cap, Cincinnati lost to the Guardians, Rays beat the Red Sox, Baltimore beats Washington, Phillies come back to the beat the Pirates, Yankees beat the Blue Jays, Twins beat the A's, and the Cubs blow another late inning lead to the Braves meaning the Giants/Padres game is an official elimination game. In the late night games, the Dodgers beat the Rockies, Rangers beat the Angels, Padres beat the Giants in extras to officially eliminate the Giants, and the Astros beat the Mariners

Rays divisional elimination number is now 2
Astros elimination number falls to 2, while the Mariners elimination number in the division is now down to 1

Mariners elimination number in the wildcard is down to 3 now.
Reds loss drops their elimination number to 3, Marlins game 1 loss drops their elimination number to 5, and are now tied for the 3rd Wildcard with the Cubs who also have an elimination number of 5. If it comes to it, the Marlins own the tiebreaker over the Cubs, so really if the Marlins don't lose again the rest of the season they are in the playoffs, no matter what the Cubs do. Padres elimination number remains at 1, and the Giants as mentioned above are officially eliminated.

In the NL home field race, the Phillies have officially locked up the 4 seed in the NL as the top Wildcard, and will host the second Wildcard on Tuesday, so they will be off the page now since they cannot move, and the Braves have a magic number of 1 for home field in the NL.
In the AL home field race, the Rangers magic number for the second bye is at 2.

In the overall race, the Braves magic number for home field throughout the playoffs is now down to 2.

Well, the season has been extended to Monday.. Perhaps.

Marlins / Mets got pushed to Monday, 10/2 for the completion of a game suspended in the top of the 9th. Florida had scored 2 runs in the top of the 9th to take a 2-1 lead before the game was suspended.

If Florida is out of the playoff picture, I doubt the game will be resumed. Florida had to leave for their series vs Pittsburgh and the Mets have Philly coming into town for a 3 game series to round out their season.

A Marlins win in that suspended game puts them a game up on Chicago and 2 up on Cincy for the final WC with 3 to play. And eliminates the Padres officially.

A Marlins loss leaves them tied with the Cubs, a game up on Cincy and San Diego still hoping for a miracle.

Seattle beat Texas to pick up a game on them and remain alive, 3 games back, for the division (I think, I haven't checked the H2H records) and picked up a half game over idle Houston

Smells like an exciting Sunday of baseball. I'm surprised there's no Primetime game on Sunday. One would think sticking Texas/Seattle there would draw some eyes.. Even though it'd likely compete against the NFL on Sunday night... I don't think Chiefs/Jets is exactly going to be an exciting game.

Thursday results:

Twins lose to the A's, D'Backs lose to the Marlins, Orioles shut out the Red Sox, Blue Jays shut out the Yankees, Braves beat the Cubs again, Dodgers lose to the Rockies, Mariners walk off the Rangers, and the Marlins/Mets game was suspended in the 9th inning.

Baltimore has won the AL East, and with it homefield advantage throughout the AL playoffs
Astros elimination number remains at 2 in the West.

Reds elimination number is 3, Padres remains at 1, and the Cubs drops to 4 while the Marlins remains at 5. Since the Marlins have the tiebreaker over every other team in the national league wildcard race with the exception of the Padres, the only scenario's where that game doesn't get finished is if the Marlins go 0-3, the Padres finish 2-1 or worse and either the Cubs finish 2-1/3-0 or the Reds finish 3-0. Or if the Marlins go 1-2 the D'Backs have to finish 2-1 or better, and the Cubs would have to finish 3-0.

Braves have clinched home field throughout the entirety of the playoffs, Orioles have clinched homefield throughout the AL playoffs, while the West winner has guaranteed themselves the second bye in the AL.

So to recap what is official at this point:

AL #1: Baltimore Orioles (AL East champion)
AL #2: AL West Champion (can still either be Texas, Houston or Seattle); Seattle wins the tiebreaker if all 3 teams finish at 89 wins; Texas wins the tiebreaker over Seattle if they only tie, while Houston wins the tiebreaker over Texas if they tie at 89 wins.
AL #3: Minnesota Twins (AL Central champion)
AL #4: Tampa Bay Rays (East runner up)
NL #1: Atlanta Braves (NL East Champion); clinched homefield throughout playoffs
NL #2: Los Angeles Dodgers (NL West champion)
NL #3: Milwaukee Brewers (NL Central champion)
NL #4: Philadelphia Phillies (NL East runner up).

Last weekend of the season is upon us: Marlins head to Pittsburgh, Blue Jays host the Rays, Padres head to Chicago to play the White Sox, Cubs play the Brewers, Cincinnati plays @ St. Louis (go figure this is a series to watch for the Reds not the Cardinals), Astros play the D'Backs in Phoenix, and the Rangers continue their series in Seattle.

Friday results:

The Marlins score 4 in the 8th inning to come back and beat the Pirates which officially eliminates the Padres from the playoffs, Blue Jays beat the Rays 11-4, Padres beat the White Sox 3-2 but have been eliminated, Cubs were walked off again this week, this time in Milwaukee, Reds beat the Cardinals, Astros beat the D'Backs, and the Mariners shut out the Rangers.

Astros cut the divisional deficit down to 1 and keep their elimination number at 2, and the Mariners elimination number is down to 2 in the AL Wildcard.
In the NL Wildcard, the Marlins move to a half game of the D'Backs for the second Wildcard, and now have a magic number of 2 as the Cubs & Reds are both tied for second in the Central.

Saturday results:

Blue Jays lose to the Rays in extras, Cubs beat the Brewers, but are eliminated because the Marlins beat the Pirates, Reds lose to the Cardinals and are eliminated from the playoffs, and the Astros beat the Diamondbacks again.

Astros elimination number in the West is at 1, but the playoff field is set: The Diamondbacks and Marlins have clinched the final 2 spots in the NL, and the Rangers, Blue Jays & Astros have clinched the final 3 spots in the AL. To set up scenario's because we have the NL 2nd & 3rd Wildcard & AL wildcard 2, AL Wildcard 3, and the AL West all in play, so I'll run through different scenario's and hopefully I covered them all!

In the NL:
Diamondbacks & Marlins both win:
Marlins are the 2nd Wildcard, Diamondbacks are the 3rd Wildcard. No need to make up the suspended game because the Marlins have the tiebreaker over Arizona, so even if the Mets were to come back and win that game and they finished tied, the Marlins win the tiebreaker anyways.

Diamondbacks & Marlins both lose:
Same as above: Marlins second Wildcard, D'Backs 3rd wildcard. No need to play the game Monday since the Marlins own the tiebreaker.

Diamondbacks lose & Marlins win:
Marlins finish a game and a half above the D'Backs.

Diamondbacks win & Marlins lose:
Only scenario which gets us the conclusion of the Monday game since the D'Backs would be a half game in front of the Marlins which would necessitate that suspended game getting finished.

In the AL (a lot more confusing than the NL):
Astros, Rangers, Jays all win:
Rangers win the West, Jays win the second Wildcard, Astros are 3rd wildcard. Astros & Jays would have the same record, but Jays win the tiebreaker due to their season series victory.

Astros & Rangers win; Jays lose:
Rangers win the West, Astros second Wildcard, Jays 3rd wildcard.

Astros & Jays win; Rangers lose:
Astros would win the AL West; Rangers Wildcard 2, Jays Wildcard 3; All 3 would have the same record. The first tiebreaker to be decided would be the AL West, which the Astros would win due to their season-series head to head matchups. Then the Rangers would win the tiebreaker over the Jays due to the season-series which was a lopsided 6-1 final in the Rangers favor.

Astros win; Jays & Rangers lose:
Same as the Astros/Jays win; Rangers lose scenario above

Rangers win; Jays & Astros lose:
Same as the Astros & Rangers winning/Jays losing scenario

Rangers & Jays win; Astros lose:
Same as above.

Jays win; Rangers & Astros lose:
Same scenario as above

Astros, Rangers & Jays all lose:
Same outcome as if all 3 teams win scenario.
