Hey, my boyfriend and I are looking for something to do around town that is free or close to it. Until we start our jobs, we are a tad short on recreational cash, so were wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what we could possibly do for fun that is also free-ish...

Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions!

Zilker park -- disc golf is free there (although you need the discs), canoes can be rented for cheap ($10 bux, plus there are coupons for certain times here - http://www.zilkerboats.com/rates.htm (broken link)). Of course the trail (lake trail and greenbelt hike) is also free. Disc golf is also at Pease park near UT.

Viewing the bats is free (unless you want to be on the boats).

There are often free music events and festivals. For example, the outdoor venue at the Long center has the Austin Symphony for free on Sundays through this weekend.
June - Season Calendar - Austin Symphony (http://www.austinsymphony.org/season/june/index.asp#cip - broken link)

Also this weekend, there is the Austin Hot Sauce festival, free admission with a donation of canned goods:
The Austin Chronicle: Hot Sauce Festival

Walking down South Congress and browsing the funky shops is free...

Touring the Capitol Building is free... UT tower costs $5.00 and you need reservations.

The Ransom museum and LBJ museums at UT are free.

Movies in the Park (Republic Park, downtown, cool place to walk around after/before) is free - http://www.originalalamo.com/Show.aspx?id=5584 (broken link)

Consult the Chronicle for more..
