In my years in Austin, the rain or storm fronts always seem to move in from the North / West side but almost never from the South or East sides. The only significant rain we got from the South was with Hurricane Harvey. Why is that? With the sea on the South, shouldn't we be getting more rain from that side?

The moisture comes from the gulf and the cold air from the northwest triggers it to rain. Generally speaking.

Science. https://www.kxan.com/weather-traffic...discovers/amp/

But seriously, it’s just the weather pattern. And fwiw, some of the worst flooding in 2017 during the Halloween floods was south, not north. That flooding led to

Depending on how you define Austin shoal creek also has a very similar history. (Some consider it north, others consider it central) https://shoalcreekconservancy.org/sh...-staying-safe/

How new to Austin are you? Gulf moisture is the biggest culprit to the rain in the city. Most pop up showers are related to gulf moisture and the tropics. We seem to forget that when it’s not the season.
