American Airlines is ending on like 20 routes in Austin starting in February. So this was a failure

That buildup in AUS was never going to work and I have no idea why AA tried it. It's almost like they had too much money so why not burn some? A focus city 200 miles from your worldwide hub never made any sense, and now that AUS demand has moderated some, the chickens have come home to roost.

That was destined to for failure from day one. Austin is a fragmented and very specific market. Its super tech heavy and tech based travel is in the dumpster right now. SJC is a shell of its former self at the current time.

This thread sure did take a turn for the worst, from where it began.

Disappointing to say the least. I don't fly American, but the prospect of Austin getting more flight options was great. I guess Delta was right in the end to put their focus city plans on hold, though I always thought it Austin airport as a focus city for Delta made more sense.

In the wake of American pulling routes, Delta is taking the opportunity to expand. They are adding 11 routes with 3 nonstop. I'm sure it's no coincidence they are making the move now.

This makes sense given that TX has always been a white space in the DL network. However, don't expect rapid growth as AUS is very gate-constrained. My gut feeling is that DL is playing the long game here - accepting mediocre returns over the next decade or so to ensure market share if/once a terminal expansion at Bergstrom is realized. It will be interesting to see how WN responds.
