After moving to Austin and living there. What were the things you wished you knew before you moved? What shocked you the most about the area? And knowing what you know now would you still have moved to Austin. And if not why? Thanks.

Groceries are pretty expensive, or so it seems to me.

You're in luck; they're planning on opening more than 60 of them:

Ha! Another former New Englander desperately missing my DD. DEFINITELY the lack of Dunkin Donuts. They were on every corner in Rhode Island. And I'm impatiently waiting for all those new DDs to open...

Yes, how bad the traffic is. Without traffic, our commutes are about 20, maybe 25 minutes. However, it usually takes 45 minutes, an hour if there is a car wreck (which is a couple times a week).

Separate school taxes in addition to the house tax. It was all rolled together in Rhode Island. It's painful writing TWO large checks in January.

Just how long it stays hot from the summer. I totally expected triple digit heat in July and August...but did not know it would still be in the 90s in October.

ETA: But yes, I would have still moved to Austin even if I knew this.

Things not taken into consideration:

Poor housing market in NE Ohio - it's been over a year and we still haven't sold our house there.

Allergies - I never had any allergy problems until I moved here.

Bugs, fire ants, snakes - YIKES!

Summer heat - While I would take triple digit summer heat over a flake of snow any day, it can get intense... especially for my husband who LOVES being outdoors.

Traffic - Getting into downtown is a PITA.

But even with the above mentioned items, I love it here and wouldn't go back to Ohio if you paid me.

We thought of taxes, traffic, etc. A lot of research was done before we got here and we even visited a year before we moved to make sure we really wanted to move here.

We did consider the fact that we have left family and friends. We adults are doing ok, but it does hurt to hear the kids say they miss grandma and cousins and why are we the only ones in the house for Christmas?

That's the sort of thing you expect, but it's got more impact than you expect when it actually happens.

It wasn't an issue of cost of gas or plane tickets, unfortunately just work schedule getting in the way.

What does that mean? I've never heard of "School Taxes". Is that something that you pay if you have school-aged children? Or does everyone have to pay it? Or is it a college thing?
