The pedestrian crossings are usually awful. They tend to back up traffic through prior signalized intersections, causing problems there for both cars and pedestrians. They are often in unexpected places, so I don't know that they increase safety.

And you wouldn't have such much truck traffic if you had a west side outer belt between I-85 and I-75.
