So are cows farting. Guess we should just kill them all.

OP, don't follow this advice. Pools are doing nothing to change the world's climate problems.

It was definitely a candidate for the CD Inane Comment Hall of Fame.

Pools are a huge part of Arizona's culture, it's like saying "don't ever go to the beach!" when you live in Hawaii

I am curious about what your budget is for a newish 4-5 bedroom house with a pool.

Do not buy a home with a pool. Don’t.

1. Absolute waste of money and space for any real swimming. Competitive swimming? Stupid to get a backyard pool. You need a large lane lap pool, preferably Olympic size, for any kind of serious lap work.

2. Arizona has stellar public pools, and they are cheap. I’m going to one in Mesa right now — I’ve seen Team USA getting in work, right alongside open public swim. This includes lap swimmers and synchronized swimmers. It’s great. The state is filled with swimming talent. Also, Arizona public pools are large, laned, some are heated in winter, and are pristine. Your taxes are paying for them. Use them.

3. I’ve rented a Biltmore home with a pool. You know what’s in the pool every morning? A lot of dead insects, palm fronds, sand, twigs. A lot of it blown in from those dusk and evening winds. You can’t go in until you give it a thorough skimming, every time, or else you will have insect parts in your hair, in your ears, in your eyes. This is the truth: I lived it for three months. I vowed to never ever again even rent a home with a backyard pool. A pool service won’t matter. This house had weekly pool service. The day after the service, the surface still had flies, mosquitoes, moths, small bees and wasps, palms, pollen, small seeds, twigs, and sand/dirt on the surface. After one day.

Don’t get a pool. Public pools are your very best friend.

I'm of the opposite opinion. I'm not living here without my own private pool. No way am I getting in a public pool full of who knows what from who knows who. Nope. Also, buying a resale house with a pool is way more cost effective than putting one in yourself.

Pools are easy. You pay a guy to come once a week to balance it and clean it. If the pump is running properly and the filter is kept clean, it will skim out anything and will remain pristine on its own.

I'm still trying to figure out "retire with a 10 year old, and a 3 year old."

I musta done something wrong.

But, I did retire with a 24 year old, so there's that, I guess.

We would never expect you to join with the unwashed masses in a public pool, thank you very much.

I agree. 6 years ago I got a bid for a new build and it was going to be close to 45,000. It was a basic pool, no waterfall or anything special and not very big. It was the deciding factor to move to a different home.

I also agree on pool maintenance. I do all the work myself. Before I swim, I skim. Not a huge deal for using my private pool. Plus having your own pool you can swim whenever you want. Since you have a competitive swimmer, this would be a plus in addition to going to a public pool with lanes.

If you're afraid of the "public" part, just carry some chlorine test strips with you and test before you swim. No chlorine available-don't swim.

Late bloomer

I was divorced at 42 with no kids

Went on a scuba diving tour of Asia. Covered Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines

Ended up with more than I expected. First child at 54 and second at 60 (Covid and working from home was to blame)

Keep me young I keep telling myself

Which is why I’m still interested in finding good schools and a swim club but mostly a good youth triathlon club. The entire San Diego county is #### for this and finding a decent road to ride on with no speed bumps, stop signs or traffic lights
