They don't send cards out anymore. The guy on the phone said as long as it is the correct policy number you are ok even if the card is not dated current. Truth or lie?

Had my policy for many years. 3rd part w/Progressive.

If it doesn't show it as a current policy then you'd be in violation.
I do believe progressive has an online proof of insurance card that you could show from your phone though.

We get ours and print them on line from the insurance companies web site.

During a recent stop in the east valley, my expired card was not accepted and I was going to be cited. Luckily, the officer was reasonable enough to give me a minute to log in to my carrier's website and bring up the document on my phone and I was not ticketed.

Now I go in and make a screen shot of the policy info so it's always accessible.

Lie. Expired dated card is not valid.
Our insurance company sends out cards, one for wallet, one to keep in vehicle.

The law states the officer needs to give you "a reasonable amount of time" to produce your insurance information electronically. Each officer will have a different idea of what is "reasonable". If you aren't going to print the card off, taking a screen shot is the smartest thing you can do because it is quickly available. The officer needs to see a valid expiration date, because they can't look it up on the computer.

If I am not mistaken as soon as your insurance lapses the DMV is notified by the insurance company and that is what the police go by. What would prevent you from getting a new yearly policy with a new card that shows a 1 year expiration and then cancelling the insurance? You would still have a card showing you have insurance but it would not be accurate.
If you have valid insurance and you cannot find the card when you are pulled over you could not be charged with not having insurance only not have your insurance card with you. I got pulled over and did not have my drivers license and I was given time to bring my license to the courthouse so they could see it and received no ticket and no fine.

what is not ok? not being able to find your insurance card in your glove box because you accidentally left it at home or not having insurance?

If you know the name of your insurance company and call them with your name I bet they could give you the policy number over the phone

what if you are in an accident and are knocked unconscious then also you would be unable to provide insurance information at the scene of the accident but could supply it later

That's why you're required to carry a copy in your glove box along with your vehicle registration.
