McHenry Mansion

The McHenry Museum was dedicated in 1972 and has been host to a variety of groups and individuals interested in experiencing the pioneer era. The McHenry Mansion was originally the city library and was passed to the City of Modesto in 1912 by the McHenry Family. In 1965, the Citizen's Cultural Center Committee was formed in an effort to raise money for the museum and arts center. The building underwent restoration and soon after the museum was added. The museum now falls under the supervision of the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department Cultural Services Manager. The museum features a complete dentist's office, a recreated blacksmith shop, and a general store, as well as gold mining paraphernalia, fire fighting equipment and a collection of cattle brands. There is also a collection of oil paintings done by Virgil W. "Bill" West, depicting the activities and lifestyle of cattle ranches. Traveling exhibits and changing exhibits are also popular attractions at the museum. School groups often plan their visits around the upcoming temporary exhibit schedule. Exhibits often include slide shows, musical events, and movies. Docent tours of the museum are available and must be schedule in advance for groups of no more than 30 people. Larger groups can be split into two separate tours and include the mansion and the museum. The gift shop offers a variety of gifts and books and is a great way to bring home piece of pioneer history.
