John Thurman Field

Adjacent to the Modesto Municipal Golf Course, John Thurman Field is home to the Modesto Nuts, a California minor league baseball team.

John Thurman Field opened in 1957 and seats 4,000 spectators. The remodel in 1997 cost just under $4 million. The minor league team in Modesto is California's longest running minor league team, having fielded a team continuously since 1966. For almost twenty of those years, the Modesto minor league team was the farm team for the Oakland A's, just 76 miles away.

The Modesto ballpark was originally named Del Webb Field. In 1983 they renamed the field after California assemblyman John Thurman. This field is unique for a few reasons. The ballpark is separated from a golf course driving range by merely some netting. Younger fans often sit outside the field on the golf course waiting for foul balls. Also, the home team bullpen has easy public access, and the relief pitchers often talk to patrons.

By car John Thurman Field is located about 25 minutes south of the Stockton Airport and is just a mile and a half south of downtown Modesto, CA. Other tourist sites in the area include the McHenry Mansion, Georgette's Doll Museum, Gallo Center for the Arts, and several city parks.
