Description: If you thought the days of real-live diners were gone with the drive-in movie theaters, think again. Boca Raton has a real, honest-to-goodness diner that people have been flocking to for what seems like forever. The emphasis is on American comfort food, with a bit of Greek thrown in for good measure (the spinach pie is an often-requested specialty). The soups are great; try the chicken soup. And the comfort food is—there’s no other way to say this—really comforting. When you dig into the meat loaf and gravy with mashed potatoes, or the turkey with cranberry sauce and stuffing, or the brisket of beef, you’ll feel very “comforted.” Ditto for the hamburgers. As you might expect from a real diner, the desserts are great—apple pie and cheesecake.

Description: This place is a bit hard to find, tucked away in an inside corner of a busy Boca strip mall, right next to a Dunkin’ Donuts, and a bit hard to see from Glades Road. But it’s well worth the extra minute or two it might take you to find it. The combination plates are very popular. The hot and sour soup is very, well, hot and sour. The spare-rib appetizer is a must. And the sesame chicken and orange beef are superb. Red lantern serves beer and wine.

Description: This restaurant is blessed with a stunning location—right on the lake, in the woodsy Wharfside Shops. The Greek salad here is excellent, crunchy and tasty and almost a meal in itself. So are the gyros, filled with chips of lamb or beef and a wonderful sauce. The eggplant dishes are very good. The moussaka is special; it’s a combination of ground meat and layered vegetables. You have to wash it all down, of course, with some very strong, licorice-and-anise-tinged ouzo. But not before you also have some baklava for dessert, the sweet, sticky, flaky pastry.
