What's the deal with the 35 mph zone near the Buster Boyd Bridge? What a joke...I'm sick of cars blowing past me at 55 - 60 mph and giving me dirty looks for going 40! Geez...sorry I follow the law.

Second biggest joke...45 mph on 274 by Crowders Creek Elementary. Does anyone go under 60 on this road? Even in the school zone when its 35 mph!!

Either put some cops out to write tickets or fix the speed limit to something realistic...UGH!

The enforcement of the speed limits in the zones you mentioned may not be as consistent as it should be, but the speed limit is certainly realistic.

With all the buses and parents dropping off / picking up their kids, you want traffic to slow down in the school zone ... even if the highest volumes of vehicles entering / leaving the school are concentrated into a short morning and afternoon period of time.

The Buster Boyd Bridge is just like I-77 crossing Lake Norman. During the warmer weather, people driving over the bridge get distracted by the boats and people in the water below, which results in more vehicle accidents.

Unfortunately, I've never heard of a seasonally-adjusted speed limit.

I'm not sure how many York Co sheriffs officers or highway patrol officers read this forum, so you might want to contact those agencies directly with your concerns.

FYI - The police provide us with entertainment as our office faces HWY 49. On one Saturday from 11-3, we counted 10 cars pulled over for speeding violations between the Buster Boyd Bridge and the intersection of 274 and 49. In fact, we warn our clients about the proactive approach that the sheriff and the highway patrol are taking to speeding in the area.

I worked in Lake Wylie on Hwy 49 just past the Buster Boyd Bridge for over 20 years ... just do the speed limit ... sometimes the Highway Patrol or County cop will be sitting just past T-Bones waiting on a speeder ... or they will be up at the top of the hill past Plantation Square.

It was a two lane road when I went to work in the area ... when they finally completed the road construction my problem was always the people entering SC from NC would get in the left lane and stay ... not move over nor let anyone move over into the left lane to turn.

part of the reason for the speed limit over the bridge may be the construction of the bridge itself. Admittedly, I know nothing about structural engineering but I suspect that strength of the structure and height of the railings, availability of shoulder/ median area (or lack thereof) probably all contribute to the speed limit localities are allowed to post on a bridge like that. It's a lot cheaper to keep the speed limit low rather than expand the bridge in order to support the "practical" speed for that area. Just a theory!!

It's the local and state government that set the design standards for the bridge, not the structural engineer that designed it. Just an fyi.....
It's the counties fault with your line of thinking.

A very sad accident just happened near the Buster Boyd Bridge because of some STUPID teens drag racing killing an English professor at Winthrop and her 2 yr old daughter.

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Funeral arrangements have been announced for Dr. Cynthia Furr, assistant professor of English, and her 2-year-old daughter McAllister Price, who died from injuries sustained in a car wreck Saturday evening near the Buster Boyd Bridge on N.C. 49.
Furr's family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 8, from 1-3 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, N.C. The funeral will begin at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Church; burial will follow in the church cemetery. At present, the family has made no announcement about memorials.
A memorial book is available this week outside Furr’s office in Bancroft Hall 254, where students, friends and colleagues can record thoughts and memories. The book will be given to the family. Furr and her daughter's obituary, published in the Charlotte Observer, can be found online.
Furr, 45, and her daughter pulled out of the RiverPointe neighborhood at 6:44 p.m. Saturday, April 4, in their Mercedes when it was struck by a car believed to be drag racing, reported the Charlotte Observer. Furr died at the scene, while her daughter passed away at a Charlotte hospital.

I know, you can tell a big difference this week since the wreck happened. They are highly patrolling that area. It is a shame that it takes a tragedy to realize that there is a speeding problem in the area.

So sad three lives lost in that accident and unfortunately it was not stupid teens drag racing ... the driver of the car that killed Cynthia Furr and her daughter was 20 years old ... he was drag racing a 44 year old woman from York ... you would think a 44 year old would have more sense. But according to her arrest records she has accumulated quite a few speeding tickets. A passenger in the car with the 20 year old was killed too, 13 year old Hunter Holt.

The 20 year old has been charged with 3 counts of second degree murder ... I don't know what they will charge the 44 year old woman with unless it was contributing ... she stopped when the accident happened ... got out of her car and walked over to the 20 year old's car and looked in ... got back in her car and went home without even checking out the Furr car. How in the world can someone just drive away and go on their merry way.

Actually it was two state governments ... half of the bridge belongs to South Carolina and other half North Carolina ... when the SC 49 widening project started there was a big problem with the old Buster Boyd Bridge ... the old Buster Boyd II (opened in 1961) had been painted over the years with lead-based paint ... DHEC was called in because of fear that the lake water would be polluted if during demolition any of the paint got into the lake. The project was two years behind schedule dealing with these problems.
