I will say that the Toronto rapid transit system does get more people using it per km. By far. But I agree that the TTC subway system is a bit under built (really there is probably 2 and at most 3 lines that should be added to the ttc).
One thing to keep it mind is I dont think TTC subway system should be built out that far in every direction like Madrid or other cities due to density patterns in certain parts of the city.
I'm just happy to see there is actual movement in terms of transit development.. Can you remember a time when there has been so much going on in terms of PT dev? I think this is something that we should celebrate and build upon instead of a never ending comparison to somewhere else.
Aside from transit i'd have to add income inequality! I'm concerned about a shrinking middle class and degraded access to secure and well paying jobs.. I think this is a problem for many cities and countries but Toronto is no exception.

I think with the new federal gov in power, we will see a lot of "secure" investment in transit for Toronto.
That's big one (income inequality). Hopefully things don't get worse in the coming years.

OK let's face it, the so called income inequality exists everywhere, especially in wealthy big cities that are by any means attractive place to live. I don't even need to name names. among all the alpha cities, there is income inequality, and people complain about it and say it gets worse every year.
I don't think Toronto is particularly bad in that regard, and probably on the better side. Canada as a while seems to be doing fine in terms of income equality and quite well in terms of intergenerational mobility

.
I'm much more optimistic with the new Federal government.. As a matter of fact, I can't think of a time in my life where we have had leaders on a Municipal, Provincial and Federal level that 'get' the importance of transit development to the extent that the current trifecta do.

I think one of Toronto's saving graces is a decent crop of affordable rental options.. If not for those there would be huge issues with people being able to afford housing.. I agree with you that Canada doesn't do badly on the topic of income inequality but I think this is a slippery slope.. Certainly this has become a bigger issue for cities like Toronto than in the past and I always pride ourselves as being a people who don't like to see others fail for our own disproportionate gain.
apathy - No one seems interested in the issues/problems. Everyone is like scared little mice to bring up the issues with politicians. they rather stay at home and watch their reality TV.
I'm shocked how none of this was even an issue during the election. Talk about some luck trough feeders (politicians), getting elected scott free while lining up for the feed pen.
oh well some old, some old...one of these days in the next 75 years maybe something will change.
