Almost all the people who voted for this know it will never happen. They are just trying to make a statement.

It was on ballot in just 4 counties. 2 passed, 1 narrow miss, 1 moderate miss.

I hear they are trying to get similar vote on spring 2021 ballot in 11 more counties.

I think the conceit here is that Idaho wants these counties. I don't see why it would.

Idaho would gain a lot of economically stagnant territory without much tax base. It would gain 1, maybe 2 House seats (if it could pick up the northern California parts). It would become responsible for a huge swath of fire-prone territory, and it already has enough of that as it is.

It would also screw over conservatives remaining of Oregon, who would become hopeless outnumbered in the legislature and unable to stop anything the liberals wanted to do; as of now, conservatives can still get wins in the legislature, especially in the state senate, by flipping some moderate democrats.

And why would Boise be anymore attentive to those counties than Salem is?

You're saying, that no matter how few states we have, or how they're configured, the ship is going to go down, anyway?

Such an optimist! lol

Oh, no, please don't! That would ruin our shopping trips for tax free buying and lunch at Cracker Barrel at Jantzen Beach!

Word is, that this isn't over. Was just on the news that it's now on ballots in 9 Oregon counties plus two more in limbo.

Oh, for crying out loud.

Every time some part of a state doesn't like what another part (or the whole country) thinks or does, the only answer they can come up with is to change the border, secede, or some other drastic, ill-considered move.

While I doubt there will ever be real traction on this, I feel compelled to comment on your statement that implies this is due to a one time event. This frustration stems from decades long insanity from Salem and PDX.
From people I know, they truthfully believe Salem and PDX care NOTHING about the them.

Also true in many other places. Illinois, upper peninsula of Michigan, California etc. There was a movement a few decades back to separate northern WI and UP for same reasoning. It died a natural death as this will.

Idaho would gain ...
ID would gain a place to stash all the Oregonians and CA folks who want to (and are) moving to ID to escape OR. I know of (6) OR families who moved to ID this yr, + ID gains nearly 300 new businesses (employers and farmers) / yr coming from WA and OR.

No room left in ID, especially since much of it is under 'wilderness area' designation, and what's left is either Mormon owned and controlled, or filled with LEO retirees from other states. ID needs more s-p-a-c-e.

80% of the land mass in WA and in OR get no representation, since only (3) counties control the vote / will of the entire state. If you are trying to be a farmer or employer, and run a profitable business, it's pretty obvious that WA, OR, or CA does not want that to happen. It's very costly, time consuming, and unreasonable to move a business and especially a farm. It takes yrs to move and yrs to re-establish soils, fences, orchards, water systems... ID has a severe growth problem, it's busting at the seams, and home and land pricing is skyrocketing (has literally become 'non-affordable' for residents, and many will be forced to displace (as I was from Colorado in late 1970's due to CA and TX influx) Our family and most others in our area were forced off our ranches because the tax assessor deemed the highest and best use of our property was for growing the population, not agriculture. Our ranch is now a public Mtn bike park. We lost it to the tax assessor because the cows could no longer meet the tax obligation. Many seniors worked their lives to establish nice communities and homes. They are being displaced by the millions immigrating to ID, CO, MT, WY, OR, WA...
