I moved to southern AZ alone at 69 (moved August 2019); it's been a good place for me personally but it's very hard meeting new people in this covid lockdown time. I have no family or friends within 3000 miles of me and that part is hard, tho I have met some friendly acquaintences.

I lived in Maine (rural part, Lincolnville Beach.... not Portland) back in my 20s. I would think the big question would be is how well do you cope with COLD. That place is damn cold, and are you able to deal with things like digging yourself out to drive or walk anywhere? I was born and raised in New England and lived there most of my adult life but MOVED out of the cold places in 2001 lest I get trapped and stuck in the house most of the year. A good choice for me; I ended up having severe arthritis with mobility problems I would have NEVER expected.... and a lot more tolerable here than there.

As far as being accepted as an outsider... two thoughts - it helps a lot if you are dirt poor and NOT condescending towards those who are also poor. I fit in because I was very very poor.

I too am planning to move to Portland "alone" within the next few months. I'm relocating from overseas and am not a millennial or even by some people's standards "young." Young is a state of mind as is "old." If we embrace the change we see for ourselves, are mostly healthy in mind and body age is FAR from a limiting factor. Congratulations on your decision to improve your life and in choosing what I hope is going to be my piece of peace. This isn't a dress rehearsal and we must LIVE.

Congratulations and good luck on your hunt!

I chuckle at society referring to 60+ as "senior". As people are living longer, it seems to me that those in their 60's are middle-age-ish. ;-) (Though any I'll gladly take any "senior" discounts. )

I don't think 62 is too old to move. You could live another 30 years. So, why not move now and write your next chapter of life. :-)

Isn't Maine the oldest state in the USA? 62 is like 49 in Maine.

I say go for it.

I moved to Portland 4 years ago at age 58 and it's been one of the best moves I ever made. Portland is a funny mix of city and small town. I've found people to be uniformly friendly and welcoming. I should say that I am a bit of an extrovert and I do think that you have to be willing to put yourself out there to meet new people. During COVID that would have been a challenge, but we're starting to come out of that. Lots of volunteer opportunities, say hi to your neighbors, get a dog. Absolutely go for it.

No its not to old but in all honesty it depends on the person themselves. We are all different. I moved from Portland the one on the West Coast to Florida at 65. After living here 6 years I'm not sorry I moved out of Portland, but I am sorry I left Oregon. Florida has turned out to be kind of a disappointment big time. I can't really afford to move back, and I make the best of it in Florida. I do own a house here though, which I could not afford in Oregon. Oregon's COL is very high and Florida is much more affordable for the most part anyway. So its not all bad.

My point is though. If you can afford it and your health is good no real limitations in your life. Then I would make the move. You only live once make the most of it. Just make sure your both financially and emotionally secure enough to move away if things didn't work out.
