This has always been mystery to me as well. It would seem that Detroit should have had a subway on par with at least the Bay Area.

Maybe you should consider the differences in population density, topography and politics that drove the planning decisions in those communities during the time subway systems were being built in this country.

Also consider that car-centric culture like Detroit was built on wasn’t exactly the kind that compelled a great outcry for public transportation.

Yeah Detroit is no mystery, it was always highly car focused, obvious.

I was looking at recent Census data and while there are mixed trends for the region, the lingering issues remain. It made look back some of the older threads on this. Seeing this comment above reminded why such topics went off the rails. It's unfortunate.

The region still has serious challenges. Even areas that have migration gains (more people moving in, than out) suffer from an overall population decline because the gains can't overcome natural decline (more deaths than births). This problem is becoming a serious one is a lot more of the country now, especially rural areas.

But, at least we're not playing bingo anymore, so that's a gain.

It is a very serious issue for here and the rest of the nation. And that should be alarming to everyone. My fear is young people are going to leave the United States if things don’t start to change when it comes to improving the quality of life in our nation. When was the last time you heard somebody talk about the American dream or how great this country is? It’s been a while and the younger generation isn’t buying what the immigrants in the early 20th century and the boomers were sold.
