My first was a small department store in Highland, Indiana. I was 18 and had no credit record yet. My sister's future mother-in-law worked at the store and told the credit department that she could vouch for me. I've had a perfect credit record ever since. Thank you, Hilda!

That reminds me. I have a brass Social Security card from my great-grandfather. Brass Social Security cards were a thing at one time. So were bronze baby shoes. It was aftermarket, not an official government card.
My first plastic card must have been my Ohio Driver's License in 1972. I have a January 1968 School Management magazine with an ad for Polaroid plastic school ID cards, but that sort of thing was rare back then. Interesting that Polaroid was state-of-the-art in 1968, but bankrupt in 2001 because they failed to keep up with technology (digital film).
In jr high we could get an ASB card for 10 bucks at the beginning of the year. That card would give us discounts at our student store and other events throughout the year. Cant remember what the letters ASB stood for but im imagining it had something to do with student something.... something...?
