That was Sears, about 1978 when we bought our first house. I needed a lawnmower and the sales person said I would save 10% if I opened a charge account so I did.
I remember when we had bank books that you put in the machine and it printed your transaction in the book. Looked kinda like a passport. I think my first plastic card was when that system was replaced. This would have been early 80s for me, as I was a teen.
After that, probably a credit card. I applied for my first one freshman year. Had that card for ages.
My first was a small department store in Highland, Indiana. I was 18 and had no credit record yet. My sister's future mother-in-law worked at the store and told the credit department that she could vouch for me. I've had a perfect credit record ever since. Thank you, Hilda!
