Your situation reminds me of a condo building I lived in not long ago. The only trash can was down the stairs and up the driveway. My neighbors would leave a bag or two of trash in the breezeway by their door and it stunk! I was the first to recognize that it was very inconvenient but I still never got lazy about it. There was an HOA, but almost all the units were rented and calling just dragged so many more people into it than necessary. Not dogging on your choice of words but I prefer the term trashy. Hobo is a derogatory term for someone without a home. Anyways good luck with your situation.

Things could be so much worse OP. At least your neighbor confines his garbage to one spot where it can be hauled away instead of letting it pile up in his yard! He may be a lazy bum but at least he's a neat lazy bum. If you're so worried about your mail you could always get a PO box and have it delivered there.

There's an old lady on my street who also leaves her can out on the curb.
In the best weather, she's barely able to wheel it back to her house, and in the snow, she simply can't move it anywhere. It's too much for her.

Her neighbors help her out, but when it's stormy, sometimes her can is out there for days.

It's one of those situations. A stranger will be reluctant to move the can onto her property, as that could land him in court. The old lady tries, but her abilities are rapidly leaving. And her neighbors all have their own lives to lead.

None of it means she's a hobo. But infirmity is the cause of much household neglect.

Again the definition of a hobo is homelessness. Certainly a serious problem, but those who have a legal place to stay are not hobos. But frankly, the term is outdated and perhaps should be disposed of. Because most don’t understand its meaning.

Can we get past the incorrect use of the word hobo and move on already?

My question to the OP, have you approached your neighbor to see if perhaps they do need assistance with moving the can? If they are perfectly capable of moving it then perhaps the two of you can come to a placement agreement? There should be a doable location for such that would not render you to use a post office box.

I had a neighbor that did that. Parked his garbage can in front of my mailbox. He would leave it sit there all week. So I would go out after the trash man came and I would move his trash can to the other side of his driveway. He'd leave it there all week and then on trash day, move it back in front of my mailbox.

Not a complete cure, but at least I could get my mail. My mailman would not get out of his vehicle to deliver mail. If he couldn't drive by and deliver the mail from his vehicle, he just didn't deliver it.

I'm guessing that at some point the neighbor was told that was the spot where the trash man wanted the cans, It wouldn't have been problem except the neighbor would just leave it there.

I read that the term hobo came from the words "homeward bound" after the Civil War. Many displaced former soldiers traveling around trying to cope with what had happened to them.

Could be, but the word has been mangled for the past century, 1900-2023. I would suggest those who use this word please understand what it really means. Again, homelessness. And unfortunately while the word is not commonly used today the underlying problem continues.

Then again, nothing stops us from calling that neighbour «*boho*». There is a fair chance an older hippy type would indulge in this kind of behaviour.
