You don't have to buy new. The vast majority of my rifles have been bought used, and none had any problems. You could just circulate through various gun stores and pawn shops and see what they have. Nothing wrong with a used Remington 700, if you can find one.

You probably don't want to ante up for it, but the Steyr Scout can't be beat, really

Look at CZ as well. And Ruger, particularly lately the Ruger 77 is upgraded in barrel and trigger, it's a good value, can't hardly go wrong.

All of the above can be found in 7-08 which is very close to the .308 in ballistics.
How much does a Steyr Scout cost?Well my dad does not want me to get a 7-08. He only wants me to get a .308 when the times comes.

I also want my .308/7.62 NATO to be a heavy to really heavy gun for recoil purposes. I am leaning towards .30-06 but my dad and fishing guide think the .30-06 is too big of a gun for me. Honestly I prefer .30-06 over .308 but my dad wants me to get a .308 over the .30-06. However the FMJ would only be for the hogs.

Seems like a very strange post from someone who is here crying extreme poverty. . .

Anyway, cheap 7.62 NATO ammo doesn’t exist. And please, don’t use FMJ on hogs. They deserve a clean kill just like any other animal. Use a quality expanding bullet.

I have a Ruger Modell 77 in .308. It shoots military ammo just fine on the rare occasions I don't use good ammo. I use 165gr ammo exclusively. Works on hogs and deer. Once I use up the commercial ammo that came with the rifle, I'll load my own since I have several thousand military match cases from competitive shooting.

don't shoot anything with FMJ bad juju. You are going to wound a lot of critters. You don't have a war on your hands.

My parents are the ones with millions not me. The stock investments are in a trust fund that I dont own or control.I only have about less than 1,000 dollars in the bank. Also I am dirt poor and broke as a joke if you go by my income because I only make about 700 to 800 dollars per month in personal income.I live far below the poverty line in personal income. My parents invest for me and own all the investments. My parents own all the oil and gas wells.I dont own a single one.

HISTORY is important. The Original 30-06 was designed for a bolt action rifle. The M1 Garand was designed to shoot that round. When they went to upgrade the M1 Garand they also wanted a more modern round. The M14 and 308 were what resulted. The 308 is designed to work best in a semi- and full-auto gun. Having said that it will work just fine in a bolt action rifle but I think you would be happier with a 270 as it shoots flatter. I like German Heym rifles but they are expensive compared to the American made stuff.

Well I would get a semi-automatic .308/7.62 NATO but my mom and dad forbid me from getting one for now so it would have to be bolt action for the time being until we buy another ranch if we ever do.I am not allowed to get any semi-automatic centerfires according to my parents. My dad does thinks the good old .30-06 kicks too much and is too big of a gun for me.

A bolt action in 6.5 Creedmoor would be better than a .270. I have never thought the .270 is that good. It's a long case, same length as the .30-06, and felt recoil is far higher than a .308 or 6.5.

The first round used in the M1 Garand was the .276 Pedersen, which is about the same length as a .308 case but with a smaller base. Douglas McArthur forced the use of .30-06 because there were large stocks of ammunition and factories set up to make it in large quantities.

The 7.62x51 (.308) was developed as a shorter cartridge with ballistics similar to the .30-06 due to new smokeless powders that provided enough energy to achieve 2700 fps with a 150gr bullet(later 147gr).

I'd get a Ruger or something like it. Winchester is too high. Ruger is positive feed. I hate having to depend on a gun where the ammo is sloshing around in the receiver before it is driven home.

I've shot tens of thousands of rounds in competition in Remington 700 and post 68 Winchester Model 70 based rifles and have had zero issues with feeding, even with 6BR which is known for not feeding well. I hunt with a Ruger 77 in .308 because I got it for a great price. I woukd be just as happy with a Remington or Winchester.
