Chicago was kind of the "IT city" in Hollywood during the 80s and 90s, as a number of moderately to hugely successful films & shows are set there:

TV

*Married With Children
*Family Matters
*Valerie / The Hogan Family
*Perfect Strangers
*ER
*Punky Brewster
*Chicago Hope
*Life Goes On
*Webster
*The Steve Haevey Show

Film

*Ferris Bueller's Day Off
*The Blues Brothers
*The Breakfast Club
*Candyman
*Child's Play
*The Fugitive
*National Lampoon's (series)
*Richie Rich
*Soul Food
*Wayne's World
*Risky Business

In hindsight, I suppose it was kind of a fun time to be there. Besides Michael Jordan, the city's population had stabilized, O'Hare was still the world's busiest airport, it experienced some of the most drastic changes/expansion in its skyline and the metro area was still amongst the fastest growing in the US.

Good list. That was definitely a great time for Chicago popular culture. Other movies from that time I associate with Chicago were Running Scared, Marked for Death, The Negotiator and Wildcats.

In terms of TV, Oprah and Jerry Springer.

Jenny Jones was also filmed there.

Yes I remember that. My wife and I on a trip after I was already back near my hometown and we were going to get into see the Jerry Springer show, but they each took turns recording every other 2 weeks for each and the week we were in Chicago Jerry was not filming but Jenny was and we got to see her show and wife actually made a comment on the show that did make it on TV. They both began in 1991 in the Chicago NBC building that was built in the 80s and built to resemble then Rockerfeller Center in NYC.

The Oprah Winfrey show began in 1986 in Chicago also with its long run there.

We can add The movie --- "UNTOUCHABLES" from 1987 also to that list. With LaSalle St (The Wall Street of Chicago) a key scene in that movie and again for the Dark Knight Batman movie in the 2000s a prominent scene in that movie among others as it still also has many of its early 20th century and the oldest standing skyscraper from the 1800s still standing proud on that street. Making it easy to use for a early era cityscape.

When I think of the 1970s, the first thing I think of is the Warriors. Graffiti on the subways. Escalating crimes. Deindustrialization. Porn in Times Square. Taxi Driver. Cities falling apart. Bronx burning. Violence. Ford tells New York to Drop Dead. Of course other cities had similar declines, but New York City seems to capture that era uniquely.

On the other end of the spectrum, tons of cities enjoyed the 1940s. There was some suburban growth but without the goddamn highways/freeways, so cities and neighborhoods were not yet destroyed. Cleveland in particular was incredibly prosperous on every level, including sports (Indians, Barons and Browns were at the top of their games), schools being among the nation's best, an endless supply of working class, middle and upper income jobs, the population at nearly a million in only 83 square miles, the beaches, parks and even suburbs absolutely thriving. Plus the neighborhoods still retained their Eurocentric identities. It was an idyllic time, kind of a microcosm of the post WW2/ pre-Korean War America, and, as a native Clevelander (I admit some bias), it (other than NYC) represents the decade IMO more than most other cities.

Weren't "Barber Shop" and "Beauty Shop" also set and shot there?
