The accent spoken by Newfoundlanders is also a great deal more similar to that of Ireland, than it is to that of Winnipeg.
---------

Louisiana is about 5% smaller now than it was at the time of statehood, owing to the sinking of coastal wetlands, because of oil and gas extraction. It's currently losing about 34 square miles a year. At the same time, it gains a little back, as topsoil from the Mississippi drainage extends the mouth of the river further into the Gulf of Mexico. In the past century, Louiisiana has fallen behind Alabama and Arkansas in rank by area.

yeah, this one is common, but still blows me away. my brother goes to northern England fairly often, and the place he visits is almost the same latitude as Alaska.

One could easily drive on I-95 from Kittery, Maine to Stonington, Connecticut in less than 3 hours and traverse five states (Maine/New Hampshire/Massachusetts/Rhode Island/Connecticut)

As the crow flies the distance from Boston to Halifax, Nova Scotia is only about 400 miles and about an hour flight directly across the Gulf of Maine in the Atlantic (nautical miles are about the same as well). Driving is an arduous 700 miles and about a 12 hour drive through New Hampshire, Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.

Iceland is amazing, you need to go.

Here another, for Atlanta, The Eastern Continental Divide line enters Atlanta from the south, proceeding to the downtown area. From downtown, the divide line runs eastward along DeKalb Avenue and the CSX rail lines through Decatur. Rainwater that falls on the south and east side runs eventually into the Atlantic Ocean, while rainwater on the north and west side of the divide runs into the Gulf of Mexico. Georgia is the largest state in area east of the Mississippi River. Atlanta is the third highest MAJOR city in the US.

The longest freestanding (supported only at the ends) escalator in the world is inside CNN Center’s atrium in Atlanta. It rises 8 stories and is 205 feet (62*m) long. Originally built as the entrance to the amusement park The World of Sid and Marty Krofft, the escalator is now used for CNN studio tours.

I know just west of Harrisburg PA (Roughly the same disatance west as DC), also the continental divide, all water also flow out through the gulf, I would imagine parts of NY State are the same with waters flowing out into the gulf.

So most rain that falls in the state of PA actually flows out via the Mississippi into the gulf, with a small portion via the Delaware Bay, and a slightly larger of rain that falls on PA via the Chesepeake Bay

If you think about there is rain that fall ~100 miles from the Atlantic Ocean in this area that enters salt water some ~1400 miles away in the Gulf of Mexico, kind of interesting to think about that rain water that falls on most of the state meanders its way by the St Louis Cathedral in NOLA

Portland, OR is further north (by quite a bit) than Portland, ME. In fact, it's about even with Montreal.
