Anybody else remember these awesome things?

I lived briefly in Fairborn in the early 80's when I was a teenager. Twice a year, our teacher would let us order Ponzos as a treat for being good students. Man, it was better than day-long recess...

I have never heard of them. What were they?

It was like a calzone, except the sauce was inside rather than on the side for dipping. Basically a folded up pizza. Man, it was amazing!

I think they closed sometime in the year we moved away, which was 1985. I think the Savino's just didn't want to run a business anymore. I guess they weren't too keen on allowing someone else own their recipe either.

I spent the first 18 years of my life in Fairborn. It's been 30 years since I've had a ponzo, but I can still smell and taste it like it was yesterday. I remember every detail of the small Savino's restaurant where they made them. They were a folded up pizza, but if I recall they were actually fried for some amount of time. I've never tasted anything as delicious since then.

You know, this is a typical post on these urban affairs forums. Some old timer comes on & starts going on about some long lost/forgotten (except to him or her) joint...restaurant, fast food place, tavern, nightclub, you-name-it.

This type of stuff was the mainstay of Craig Daltons forums at Dayton History Books Online. I've also seen it at the forums on the Forgotten Chicago website.

The only Italian place I heard of in Squareborn was/is Giovannis. Though the Fairborn fast food place I miss was the New England Deli over in Little Kentucky

Curt Dalton.

And, there's a facebook page which does much the same thing. It is, after all, history.

Postscript: don't nobody go looking for an active history message board at Dayton History Books -- it's been closed due to circumstances beyond control.
