The State agreed to an accountability measure: for each project component, if the State does not complete and open that component to traffic by a specific date, the State will forfeit or return the lesser of $10 million or 10 percent of that component’s costs.
The other day it was announced that the Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the Catawbas' casino application. They have put the land in trust. The reason that I'm mentioning this is that the Catawbas offered the state more money than the Cherokees pay the state, annually. The Cherokees got permission from NC governors.
Because the state did not give permission to the Catawbas, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs took that land into trust, the Catawbas will not owe the state one red cent. Their plan is to put that money into local improvements, including transportation, annually.
The Catawbas won't owe one red cent? Is there a pun intended?
Contracts have been awarded for the last sections of the Shelby Bypass and a new interchange at Mooresboro. Construction can begin on the rest of the bypass at the end of August and it is supposed to be completed by the end of October 2028. Once both projects are finished, U.S. 74 will be a continuous freeway from I-26 to I-85.
I just drove on US-74 for the first time yesterday. I took it from Kings Mountain all the way to I-26 and the stretch through Cleveland County was possibly the nicest road in NC I've ever driven on. Looks like Tim Moore has been bringing home the bacon to his home county!
This is my area and they are taking forever. The Panthers might win a Super Bowl before this is completed which is saying a LOT!
