Friday, the airport announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) filed a Notice of Intent to draft an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to look at the effects on the environment from the project.

Elements of the project include a shift and extension of Runway 5-23, adding a new terminal and modernizing the passenger experience, among other parts.
I know that this will take years to come to fruition, but I am excited about the potential.

Opposition to the runway expansion is starting to surface. I love Coonskin Park, and would hate to see such a large chunk of it go. However, having a longer and safer runway at the airport is probably better for the region. It would enable larger planes, and also possible developable land for the airport.

Two flights with three more coming within the next two years, including NYC. Great news!

It'll be interesting to see the level of subsidy/incentive package the state and Kanawha Co. are giving to Breeze for these flights, as well as the out clause for Breeze if the routes underperform.

The financial agreement between Breeze, the state, the Kanawha County Commission and the City of Charleston includes a guarantee of usage.

The "Save Coonskin Park" group is trying to bring awareness to the Kanawha Valley about the proposal to extent Yeager's runway into the park.

https://wvmetronews.com/2023/08/04/e...coonskin-park/

I have mixed emotions about this. Will the airports plans ultimately be better for the Charleston area, or is this a waste of land and money? I like to think that providing the airport with as much usable runway space and developable land is beneficial. However, I am a huge fan of Coonskin Park. The whole park isn't in jeopardy, but a huge chunk of it would be.

Is there some way to expand the runway, and enhance the park experience? I don't know. A lot of trees will be gone, so the appeal of the park might be taken away.

I am completely unconvinced that the airport needs to expand into Coonskin Park.

A 747 can land and take off. Charleston is not going to need to handle any larger aircraft in the foreseeable future.

The county commissioners need to stop this insanity.

While a 747 “can” land at Yeager, the runway conditions aren’t ideal for it. Air Force one has to routinely come and practice landing at Yeager because the runway is a tricky one for a larger plane. We certainly don’t have a need for larger planes at the airport, but I could at least understand the argument for safety reasons. There’s a need for our state to have an airport that can accommodate anything, and increase the capacity for commerce.

It’s a shame they can’t add onto the other end. Lord knows that would be a disaster!

While you have the facts right, the reasoning isn't. Air Force One sometimes comes to Yeager to get in an hour of flight time for the crew. They have landed those 747s at Yeager so many times that it's routine. That's what my Washington Air Force source tells me. If it was unsafe, they simply wouldn't do it.

I don't think expanding the airport because "we might need it sometime" is an adequate reason to spend millions of public dollars. The airport already has a massive amount of excess capacity.
