Perhaps it’s focus and attitude that shape opinions when considering good changes versus bad changes in any fast-growing historic port city that attracts lots of visitors. In the time frame under examination in this thread, there have been many more changes for the better than for the worse.
I disagree with you on just about everything (I'm sure everything), and I believe there are more negative changes to Charleston in the last five years than the few positives that occurred.
For one thing, keep abreast of the issues in the news and get some focus on whom to blame and not to blame for the things that need work and are, in fact, already being worked on.
Charleston is quite special. But if I were down on where I lived, I would either start getting involved to help affect changes I thought needed to be made or I would leave. Life’s too short.
I know the feeling. We lived there from 78 to 83. Got back there in 04 and again in 18. CRAZY amounts of riffraff and not at all what it was. It has not faired well. It's heartbreaking.
Thank goodness it’s not like it was from ‘78 to ‘83. That was why I chose Columbia over Charleston back then. Most of what’s different about Charleston since then has most definitely been for the better. My two sets of commerce-oriented eighth great-grandparents at Charles Town would be proud of the bustling city it has become, despite economic devastation following the Civil War, the earthquake, the fire, Hugo, the naval base closure, and COVID’s abrupt effects.
