Who do Canadians root for in the American Revolution, the Brits or the Americans? I would assume since Canada was British at that time it would be the Brits. I would think there would be some who would root for the Americans because they were fighting for their freedom and are kind of the protaganist.

I root for the Americans. I'm a proud Canadian and glad we never left the Empire as it allowed us to become a comfortably sized nation with what I feel is a superior system of parliamentary democracy. That said, I have no illusions as to what a horribly immoral regime the British Empire was and the Americans had some good reasons to revolt against it (and some less good ones we don't always here about). In the end, I come down in favour of the Americans because the enlightenment ideals they fought for were, I think, quite noble and the revolution did have a positive influence on the way the world developed. Absolute Monarchy is no way to go about governing a country, and who knows if we'd have ended up as democratic as we did without the influence of the United States? I do however agree with the thinking of Canadiens of the time in not joining the revolution as I don't think French Canadian culture would have survived becoming part of the union. If it had joined, though, it'd be interesting to think about how the presence of Quebec might have effected the development of State's rights and the Civil War.

That's something I'd never given any thought to but BIMBAM's post is very succinct and about sums it up for me too.

Good post BIMBAM.

It seems to take a long time to load on my computer (buffering) but in the end was worth it.

LOL - well, having lived in both Alberta and Quebec City, I would have to say that for me, Alberta wins hands down for natural beauty but Quebec City wins for stunning old buildings, restaurants and joie de vivre
