^Just to address something, but Lockport’s poverty rate is actually not much higher than the national rate(15.4% according to 2013-2017 census information(American FactFinder) vs. 14.6% nationally for the same period). That rate is for the city of Lockport, btw(It is 10.2% for the town of Lockport).

I ran a business there for 50+ years and regardless of what the census figures say, the area is one of the poorer ones in the Erie Niagara region. Its skewed by the areas that are close to Amherst. We had our business right near all that building and we had minimal people come to us. There is some building going on, but its because Amherst is mostly built out and cheap tracts of land are available in the Town of Lockport that are closer to Amherst. The UB campus also drives building in the Town of Lockport because its a lot cheaper than Amherst. I had friends that lived there and they had major problems with water in their basement and needed 3 backup sump pumps. People that live there shop in Amherst as BMD69 has pointed out.

Being one of the poorer places in the area(which it likely isn’t and if so, it is an urban community with a range and it is relative) and being high poverty aren’t necessarily the same. It takes a simple search to see this in terms of Lockport.
What has likely happened is that the population has just sprawled into the town of Lockport or to nearby towns, which have been one of the fastest growing towns in the area.

I like my house, but the city of Lockport isn’t the village east aurora where I lived. It seems to be very conservative. What do young people do here to have fun.

CK when was the last time you went to Lockport? I know you live in Syracuse, which is far away. BMD69 is right on with what you have to do to live there. There is nothing except a Walmart to shop at. Everything is across the county line in Amherst. Lockport can't support more than that. GM leaving took much of the economy away. I was in business there, I saw in person, how the clientele changed. Most of our customers went from GM employees and retirees to folks on public assistance. You can quote statistics from now till doomsday and it doesn't change anything.

Again, there is no argument about the city’s poverty rate. It is plain and simple, with perception and reality being different. That was the initial point.
