I have a 2010 4Runner Trail Edition and suggest looking for that or one of the TRD whatevers they have been making recently. Locking rear diff, ASC for the front that is effectively a locker, crawl control, terrain settings, etc. It all works very well.
I would sell the convertible to increase your budget for the off road family vehicle.
Thanks, but it’s an r129, car I lusted after since I was a kid. I need it to feel balanced. It’s my decompression vessel. 2 seats, v8 , no top, killer Bruno Sacco design.
I’ll just save a bit more and find something suitable.
Also ways like d those, the second gen. But they are so rare and I assume parts are hard to get. Great looking trucks though.
When I lived in Africa, I knew some folks with Troopers. They were OK around town, but could not get out of their own way on the beach. We had to get one guy unstuck 8 times in a day. It was an underpowered diesel model, the gas ones might be better. I'm just going to stick with the 4Runner.

I had a 94 when I lived in Costa Rica. Great little truck for cruising around in the mountains. It was underpowered with the 6 banger gas engine but with 4-low I could crawl up/down the mountain "roads" without any problem. Got to see a lot if the country with that thing.
I still prefer the older larger/wider US SUV's of the 70's/80's as being back in the US, beaches are my only 4 wheeling so I don't have to worry about squeezing through narrow trails/roads. And aluminum, like a modern F150 is great to have on the coast (The body will still look good as the frame rusts away ). But that Trooper was great to have in Costa Rica because of the narrow roads and street side parking in the nearby town where stayed. It was originally imported (probably stolen ) from GA but it had legal paperwork when I bought it!
