I absolutely hate what has happened to F1. It's just about the hype, the "spectacle". Muffled, basically spec cars running on boring Tilke circuits, ground effects vs raw power, rev limits, track limits, sausage curbs, races in parking lots, announcers who gush about every pass, celebrity interviews, $53,000 fines to a driver who touched a rival's car w/ his finger. I mean, have these people gone crazy?

F1 now looks like People magazine. Thank goodness dirt track racing is still around. There's a tiny bit of good racing IF you can find it on the TV or the computer. Indycar is often so good that you're glued to the TV. I miss those screaming V8 and V12 engines

I gave up on F1 after the debacle that allowed Verstappen to pass Hamilton to claim his first title.

It's more popular in the US than it ever was.

It should be. Rock concerts sell out in minutes. F1 just follows the money. When is the last time you saw a real race car fan at an F1 race?

Frankly IDT a real fan would pay that kind of money for a ticket. You can see everything and everyone you want to see except a race.

I'm a huge fan of anything racing. I've been to COTA for F1, NASCAR, and Indy. No difference in the passion of the fans.

As part of the generation that could only see the Monaco Grand Prix on ABC's Wild World of Sports and Mario Andretti's championship run put him in competition with A.J. Foyt as the G.O.A.T. I would say TV replacing the car magazine is the difference, especially since Long Beach transfered to Indy cars.

I'm not sure what magazines and TV have to do with the LBGP. I've lived here all my life but I'm no historian. So I can't tell you when TV coverage started or changed (it did) WRT to F1, CART, Indy Car or whatever banner they have run under.

I think I can tell you that the F5000 race run as a shake down for the track was not a national TV event. None were. I was on Rex Ramsey's pit crew for some F5000 races but IDT he made Long Beach that year. The one-off race that could have been a pretty good series if promoted right.

Shoot, Brian Redman and David Hobbs along with several very capable drivers contested that championship. While CART was trying to figure out what a road race was these guys were doing nothing but RR's in Canada and the U.S.

No, it didn't have the excitement of a Matra F1 car driven by Jackie Stewart, but F1 proved to be too expensive for Long Beach to cover their demands. If there ever was a do over in life, F1 would have found immense success in Long Beach. But we couldn't pay their fee then.

So CART came in and in one form or another, have been here ever since and there is no lack of paying gate receipts. I think we get more people than Portland and Laguna combined.

I used to enjoy F1, because there was actual racing.

Now, it's nothing more than a taxi cab race.

Correction: It's a parade, as there's no passing.

I may watch the Las Vegas race.

F1 is spending close to a half billion for one race of 50 laps. If it does well, then future races will cost less.

In comparison, Alegiant Stadium cost $1.9B to build, about 4x more.
