"Expect to get an eyeful of local cities when HBO’s “The Gilded Age” second season debuts on Oct. 29. The story will open on Easter Sunday 1883.
Scenes for the first episode were filmed in Albany and Troy in the summer of 2022, including an Easter Parade sequence filmed on State Street in Albany. The street served as a stand-in for New York City’s Fifth Avenue during the historic period the show depicts.
The social upper-crust wars between old and new money will play out through eight episodes on HBO and streaming on MAX, according to a release announcing the new season.
“Season two of 'The Gilded Age' begins on Easter morning 1883, with the news that Bertha Russell’s bid for a box at the Academy of Music has been rejected. Through the eight episodes of the season, we watch as Bertha challenges Mrs. Astor and the old system and works to not only gain a foothold in society but to potentially take a leading role in it,” according to HBO’s announcement.
While there’s a high-society battle being waged, another fight will be waged between labor and management during a strike at a Pittsburgh steel mill owned by magnate George Russell, husband of Bertha Russell. The strike can be viewed in the trailer with Harmony Mills in Cohoes taking the place of a 19th-century steel mill in Pennsylvania.
The teaser released by HBO gives quick flashes of mostly indoor scenes — from the opera to lavish dinners to church scenes to a glimpse of the Brooklyn Bridge, which appears to loom above some Capital Region buildings that serve as sets in 19th-century Manhattan.
Julian Fellowes created “The Gilded Age” to show the tensions when vast wealth was accumulated by newcomers who strove to force their way into New York society.
Starting with Troy standing in for Manhattan in season one of the series, Albany and Cohoes joined Troy for appearances in season two.
Large sections of all three cities' streetscapes have survived since they were built in the 19th century.
Capital Region streets, churches, theaters and homes were all used as sets for last year’s filming. Scenes were also filmed in mansions along the Hudson River in the Hudson Valley."
