To continue with the old money feel, walkable theme, this Madison County lakeside village fits. https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9288...6!9m2!1b1!2i37

https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9341...6!9m2!1b1!2i37

It is home to a small college in Cazenovia College: https://www.cazenovia.edu/

You can walk to all of the schools in the district: https://cazenoviacsd.com/

It has a nice, "New England" like Downtown with quite a few businesses: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9299...6!9m2!1b1!2i37

There is also a plaza on the eastern edge of the village: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9260...6!9m2!1b1!2i37

For the closest big box shopping, Fayetteville is the closest location about 20-25 minutes away by car. good option if you want a smaller community with very good schools, while still being close enough to suburban areas/Syracuse.

Another walkable village further out in the metro area that is in the town that grew the fastest in the area from 2000-2010 is Hamilton in Madison County: https://www.thisishamiltonny.com

It is home to Colgate University and its location allows for people to go to either Syracuse or Utica for events and extensive shopping. https://www.colgate.edu/

It has a nice Saturday morning Farmer's Market and arts based events in its Downtown. This is along with events that occur at Colgate University. https://www.google.com/maps/@42.8268...6!9m2!1b1!2i37

Some nice older homes down the street from Downtown: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.8280...6!9m2!1b1!2i37

Some listings: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...,-75.523393,15

It is a very small, but good school district with both of its schools on the same campus/area: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.8224...6!9m2!1b1!2i37

https://data.nysed.gov/profile.php?instid=800000050943

It has lower utility rates due to getting them from a NYPA, municipal company: https://hamilton-ny.gov/municipal-electric/

Besides the university and other nearby colleges/universities, companies in Cazenovia, Oneida, Canastota and the Oneida Nation are the closest options.

In terms of the including Cayuga County, which is a part of the Syracuse Combined Statistical Area, the Hoopes Park/East Genesee Street area of Auburn is another area with nice older homes on the East Side of the city: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9348...6!9m2!1b1!2i37

https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9327...6!9m2!1b1!2i37

https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9338...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

It is a reasonable walk to its downtown, which includes things like Wegmans and the Auburn Public Theater, as well as some bars/restaurants: https://www.auburndowntown.org/

It also isn't too far from area big box shopping to the north on Grant Avenue and Skaneateles is only 5 miles to the east on East Genesee Street/Route 20.

https://www.eastwoodneighbor.com/ (James Street serves as a Main street for the neighborhood, which has about 10% of the city's population. There is a small collection of businesses down the hill to the south on Burnet Avenue as well.)

A portion of the Park Avenue neighborhood(east of Geddes closer to Downtown on city's West Side): https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0520...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/137570963587554305/

Besides Downtown, you have a park, Middle Ages Brewing, the Polish Home, an Aldi, Syracuse Academy of Science Charter(grades 7-12), Sacred Heart Church(historically Polish parish), Harrison Bakery, a couple of credit unions and perhaps even the pubs/few places to eat in Tipperary Hill(historically Irish neighborhood) that you can walk to.

Dewittshire(town of DeWitt/Jamesville-DeWitt SD just east of the city): https://www.facebook.com/DeWittshireNY/
https://www.google.com/maps/place/De...!4d-76.0696493

https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0343...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

Can walk to this plaza, a Tops Supermarket, another plaza that includes a few Indian businesses or a synagogue on East Genesee Street: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0353...2!9m2!1b1!2i37

There is also Moses DeWitt Elementary in the neighborhood, which is a solid/good school with a decent degree of diversity(culturally and even economically): https://www.jamesvilledewitt.org/mosesdewitt

The Orvilton area across East Genesee Street(town of DeWitt/J-D SD): https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0368...6!9m2!1b1!2i37

I'll stop there for now, but what is could be appealing for those coming from NYC or other bigger cities is that most of these areas offer a decent to good degree of walkability and/or access to public transportation(bus).
Here are a few more streets that fit the bolded description(including adjacent neighborhoods): https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0318...2!9m2!1b1!2i37
