For the closest big box shopping, Fayetteville is the closest location about 20-25 minutes away by car. good option if you want a smaller community with very good schools, while still being close enough to suburban areas/Syracuse.
Another walkable village further out in the metro area that is in the town that grew the fastest in the area from 2000-2010 is Hamilton in Madison County: https://www.thisishamiltonny.com
It is home to Colgate University and its location allows for people to go to either Syracuse or Utica for events and extensive shopping. https://www.colgate.edu/
Besides the university and other nearby colleges/universities, companies in Cazenovia, Oneida, Canastota and the Oneida Nation are the closest options.
In terms of the including Cayuga County, which is a part of the Syracuse Combined Statistical Area, the Hoopes Park/East Genesee Street area of Auburn is another area with nice older homes on the East Side of the city: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.9348...6!9m2!1b1!2i37
It is a reasonable walk to its downtown, which includes things like Wegmans and the Auburn Public Theater, as well as some bars/restaurants: https://www.auburndowntown.org/
It also isn't too far from area big box shopping to the north on Grant Avenue and Skaneateles is only 5 miles to the east on East Genesee Street/Route 20.
Both of these streets are south of of the city's Downtown, with the South Street Historical including the William Seward House Museum and is just north of the Harriet Tubman Home: Seward House Museum | One House. Many Stories.
https://www.eastwoodneighbor.com/ (James Street serves as a Main street for the neighborhood, which has about 10% of the city's population. There is a small collection of businesses down the hill to the south on Burnet Avenue as well.)
Besides Downtown, you have a park, Middle Ages Brewing, the Polish Home, an Aldi, Syracuse Academy of Science Charter(grades 7-12), Sacred Heart Church(historically Polish parish), Harrison Bakery, a couple of credit unions and perhaps even the pubs/few places to eat in Tipperary Hill(historically Irish neighborhood) that you can walk to.
I'll stop there for now, but what is could be appealing for those coming from NYC or other bigger cities is that most of these areas offer a decent to good degree of walkability and/or access to public transportation(bus).
