I was there on Saturday, it had been a number of years since I was last.
I never bothered with shows before, so I had to be told about the missing grandstand.
The app and the printed map use different names for a number of the venues. As an infrequent visitor, that was irritating and we missed events as a result.
I was surprised at the proportion of out-of-state cars I saw in the parking lot. I suppose many (like me) were CNY diaspora who felt like attending on a nice holiday weekend day.

I guess there was a big push by the state in order to get people from other parts of the state and Northeast. It appears to have worked and I-690 was essentially a parking lot on Saturday afternoon.

Update on this for 2018--apparently 2018 was a new attendance record for the state fair and ranked third in attendance among all state fairs (after those of Texas and Minnesota).
I've never been to the New York State Fair. Anyone go in 2018?
I’ll just say that I haven’t gone in a while, but if you go and are driving, expect traffic. However, I suggest using Park-N-Ride, which has many locations to park and take a shuttle to the Fair. https://www.centro.org/service_schedules/ny-state-fair
