We are relocating from Southern Texas to Massena New York for my husband's job. I am asking for any information or advice about the location as I know nothing about the area. Are there any rental homes? What are the taxes like as we are coming from a state that does not have state tax? I have a ton of questions as what I have seen on google is beautiful. Can not wait for 4 seasons instead of 1 1/2. Thank you for any advice or information anyone can give me.

It is a village of about 11,000 that is relatively isolated within the North Country region of the state. However, it isn’t too far from major Canadian cities such as Ottawa and Montreal. It is on the St. Lawrence River and the Adirondacks are pretty close as well. It is known for its relatively big Native American presence and a long time Armenian community. It is generally affordable, but watch property tax rates. Alcoa and the Akwesasne Casino are a couple of bigger area employers.

Hopefully others with more specifics can chime in.

...Anymore..even in the NE U.S...weather can be unpredictable...The 4 seasons up there vary in length...but..there ARE 4 seasons up there. No issues with drought, drenching humidity, or 100 degree temps..and ...lets see...no poisionous spiders, scorpions, etc...Ticks have..as across the U.S...become more of an issue. You will be just above the Adirondacks..and near the St. Lawrence. Opportunities for weekend travel are numerous.

Yes, I am not going to miss any of the humidity or high temps 90% of the year.

^I would say there would be a lot of land outside of the village, but I’m not sure how much of it is available.

This shows what is available within the area that covers the Massena SD: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...91261?view=map

That map will also give an idea of the location of the village/school district.

As for signature foods in Upstate NY, the closest to that area that comes to mind are Michigans, which are a certain hot dog style in the Plattsburgh area. Different regions have their certain foods like Salt Potatoes in the Syracuse area, Spiedies in the Binghamton area; (East) Utica Greens/Chicken Riggies/Tomato Pie/Half Moon cookies in the Utica-Rome area, Garbage Plates in the Rochester area; Beef on Weck/Buffalo Wings/Loganberry Drink in the Buffalo area are some that come to mind. There are area/regional food brands as well.

Thank you so much for the great information. I can not wait to try some of the yummy-sounding foods.

Do visit the Laura ingles Wilder museum and home in Malone ny. https://almanzowilderfarm.com/
Beautiful country up there, winter IS ferocious, but that’s what a wood burning stove is for. The mighty St Lawerence river, The beautiful Thousand Islands, Cape Vincent, the canal in Massena. Montreal,Plattsburgh, Burlington VT. are a day trip away.
Skiing, snowshoeing, Grouse/partridge hunting, waterfowling, some of the best Musky fishing in theUS is right there. Salmon fishing, steelhead, brown trout. All minutes away from you.
Farms, farmstNds , Amish (excellent woodworkers)

The growing season is somewhat more limited in duration than where I am at..central/western NY. But if you are hoping to do the garden "thing", you can start plants indoors, or buy potted/pre-started plants to put in a garden after the last frost. Ckhthankgod is a reliable poster to give leads on websites for your housing needs. NY gets some undue negativity from all the issues downstate/NYC (and our less than stellar state govt). Take a look at a post I put up, along with the replies.. " Positive thoughts about upstate NY". Many visitors to upstate(the area north of the NY suburbs; Catskill mtns + going north) are very enthusiastic about what they find vs their preformed opinions. Can't offer too much more about the Massena area, though I did travel through there often, while at Ft. Drum.
