So it sounds like the entire NY 17 highway from Waverly to Binghamton is ready to be re-designated as I-86 as soon as they finish the Prospect Mountain project. I've seen December 2020 as a completion date, but that was from last year's reports. Do you drive this area? If so, what do you think? Does it look like they're just about done?
A year later, and I can't find a darn thing on the Interwebs about this. OP, do you happen to know if it's been switched to I-86 west from Binghamton, or is it still NY 17 from there to Waverly?
^It looks like the portion a little bit west of I-81 to Waverly is still Route 17, while the rest of the route is I-86.
I wish I knew what was taking them so long. I had read that the hold up for making the switch was the completion of the Prospect Mountain interchange. In other words, NY 17 had already been upgraded to interstate standards and all they had to do was switch the signs. Prospect Mountain was supposed to have been completed in December 2020, but I've seen nothing to say whether it was or not. NYSDOT's project page hasn't been updated in several years, and when I tried the "contact us" feature, the message bounced back as undeliverable.
