I did a search and didn't find what I was looking for but I apologize if this has been asked. My husband is up for a job in Watertown and I can't find much about the public schools except their very low rankings. Rankings don't mean much, I know, so I am curious if there is some other information out there about the schools? If he gets the job, we'd need to know school info pretty quickly as our child will be in kindergarten in the Fall of 2011. Are they good schools? We really prefer public schools, but even if we did choose private, I can't even find any private non-religious schools and parochial is not an option for us.
I am not looking for amazing schools or anything--if we don't move our daughter will attend Chicago Public Schools so you can see what our standards are, ha ha. I know Syracuse has better ranked schools but that seems like a really long commute, especially in winter. Or is that doable and we should stick with that area?
Watertown City schools are average. Not awful, but there are better school districts in that area. Look at General Brown, 1000 Islands, Sackets Harbor and the school districts that kids on Fort Drum go to, Indian River and Carthage are good. With the last two, they also have some "diversity" to them. Coming from Chicago, I'm not sure if that is a concern or not though, but thought that might give you an idea in terms of options.

Thank you! My husband is of Indian parentage so diversity is a concern; I don't want my daughter to be the only Asian kid she knows. I will check out those towns. I have only heard of Sackets Harbor though it looks sooooo tiny.

Yes, Sackets Harbor is tiny and the whole school district is in one building. General Brown and 1000 Islands are small school districts, but not that small. They have a "sprinkle" of diversity due to some soldiers/military affiliated families living in those school districts.
Personally, I would look at Watertown, Indian River and Carthage based on your criteria. If you go with Watertown, look at the South side neighborhoods off of Washington Street. There are some nice neighborhoods near the zoo. If you want Carthage, look at villages like Carthage, West Carthage and Black River. For Indian River, you might like Philadelphia, Evans Mills, Calcium and Theresa. Keep in mind that the last 2 districts are more small town/rural too.
Not sure why this got moved; is Watertown not considered the Syracuse area? Sorry, I was just picking the biggest city nearby I could think of.
Technically, it isn't but you still get Syracuse media outlets in the Watertown area. Same with media from Canada(Kingston and Ottawa Ontario).
