Someone on AARoads forum emailed AASHTO about their recent meeting results, which was posted. Looks like Future I-685 is a done deal. AASHTO approved NCDOT's request during it's spring meeting earlier this year.

With a future I-685 designation already in place for a portion of U.S. 421 in southern N.C. already approved, the Carolina Core is now attempting to get a portion of the highway in northern N.C. designated as a future interstate.

Interstate 340 makes much more sense than 777. Though I will admit that 777 would be the coolest shield in the whole Interstate system.

What is the feasibility of Interstate 340 as a spur to Jacksonville?

Good question. Jacksonville has lousy connection to the Interstate.

I always figured I-140 will extend to Jacksonville at some point. The Hampstead bypass should be I-140 and that will take you almost to Surf City.

Then it can get extended further into Brunswick Co as well.

The celebration of the designation of part of U.S. Highway 421 as Future I-685 comes after an announcement last month that another corridor on U.S. 421 in the northern Triad could become Future Interstate 777.
