Someone on AARoads forum emailed AASHTO about their recent meeting results, which was posted. Looks like Future I-685 is a done deal. AASHTO approved NCDOT's request during it's spring meeting earlier this year.
With a future I-685 designation already in place for a portion of U.S. 421 in southern N.C. already approved, the Carolina Core is now attempting to get a portion of the highway in northern N.C. designated as a future interstate.
The celebration of the designation of part of U.S. Highway 421 as Future I-685 comes after an announcement last month that another corridor on U.S. 421 in the northern Triad could become Future Interstate 777.
