I was scrolling Reddit and an individual posted a picture of their AR-style pistol on which they had mounted a foregrip. I understand that you need to obtain an ATF Tax Stamp if you want to mount a foregrip on a pistol.
It is none of my business; if I warn him, he may take it wrong. On the other hand, I could save him 10 years of his life on the outside. For all I know, he got a tax stamp but preferred the arm brace on his gun rather than a stock.
None of my business. Perhaps it was done for the picture? An arm brace and a fore grip are two completely different things, both are controversial and generate heated discussions. I'd prefer to keep my mouth shut. PSGWSP.
I contacted the individual. It turns out that only a 90 degree verticle foregrip is illegal. He says his is mounted at a 45 degree angle so apparently it is legal. I apologised for my confusion and all is well.
Ever since these pistols with arm braces came out I have been wondering how many people are violating the law due to not knowing.
This is the reddit thread that triggered me. Seems to me you are playing with fire when you add questionable accessories. The utility of a foregrip doesn't seem to be worth the risk of one to three years in jail.
Looking at the photo of the legal foregrip ScoPro posted and comparing it to the one on the Reddit post I am referring to the Reddit one looks like it may be illegal. I tried to warn him so whatever happens is of no concern to me.
Fuzzyduck will wind up as cookedduck if the ATF traces his location.9
