Can someone tell me how far it is from the Fairbanks Airport to mile marker 115 or 125 on the Dalton Highway where the Arctic Circle is found. Also, can some local person that knows the area well tell me the best place to get fresh salmon and/or crab legs. I promise I won't let out the secret. Thanks.

Multiple info sites state the drive from Fairbanks to milepost 115 (where BLM's Arctic Circle Monument sign is located) is 198 miles and takes just over 7 hours. The drive is via the Dalton Highway (AK 11). From the actual airport the mileage is slightly different:

Just two links:

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...ks_Alaska.html

https://www.rome2rio.com/s/Fairbanks...Circle-Sign-AK

I've still got my personal "first winter crossing" photo around somewhere!

As for seafood, do you mean restaurant meals or buying the stuff for yourself?

Thanks for the info I have a rental car booked, so if I go I will drive. I am interested in a restaurant specializing in salmon and/or Alaskan crab. Is that 7 hours one way or both ways?

Most of the Dalton Hwy is gravel and can be rough. I don't recall how far north of Fairbanks the pavement ends but other C-Ders who live there can chime in about that. The road conditions at the time of your trip will affect how long the drive takes, but consider that a 200 mile drive on clear pavement would take about 3 hours.

Be aware that not all rental car companies permit you to take their vehicles onto soft surface roads. You'll need to double check this carefully. If you go off the pavement anyway and the car ends up damaged (pocked or cracked windshield for example...the Dalton gets a lot of heavy truck traffic) you could be liable for repairs.

The Milepost is an essential AK travel guide.

Here's a very informative pamphlet about driving the haul road. I know you're only going as far as the Arctic Circle marker, but the advise still all applies, and aligns with my experience driving it: https://www.blm.gov/sites/blm.gov/fi...rGuide-web.pdf

Check with your rental agency that you're allowed to drive the rental vehicle on the Dalton. A lot of them won't let you on the Dalton or the Denali.

How long drives take in places like this vary wildly by daily road/weather conditions and by whether you're easily distracted by wanting to take a pic of every moose you see, haha. I personally would set aside a good 10 hours for round trip, including stopping to have a look at the Yukon River visitor center, and just consider it good fortune to get back earlier.

Can't help on the seafood, sorry, I cook my own salmon and I don't eat crab

Agree with leaving time to explore visitor centers and mom/pop roadside attractions. Lots of interesting, entertaining, even bizarre things to see. You've come a long way to reach the place...so enjoy it! When we stopped at the general store in Joy, AK after crossing the Yukon River's impressive bridge we were warned about the resident horse. Given half a chance he'd shove you aside, clump right into the store and make a beeline for the snack bar!

Thank youguys for the valuable information. The car that I rented isn't new therefore cost about 1/2 the normal rental price. I think that I will put the trip to the Arctic Circle on hold. I will likely be visit the Arctic Circle next year when in Norway. I will be in Fairbanks about 4 days so I will limit my trip to more local venues. I did get permission to drive to the AC with the rental. I supposed it is allowed since it isn't anew car. Again, thanks for the valuable information.

Fresh seafood and Fairbanks do not go together. You're in the wrong area of the state.

Costco, Fred Mayer, and Safeway have these products. Fish, crab, and the rest are frozen before shipping, and then thawed at the stores. But one can also buy it while still frozen, which is the best thing to do if one is traveling several hours away from the supermarket. Still have to transported it on ice in an ice chest.
