The presidents of MIT, Harvard, and University of Pennsylvania testified before Congress and they did not put on a good showing. While they denounced the attacks on Jewish students, none would say those were violations of the code of conduct nor would they say anyone was held accountable for their actions. In one exchange they said they were protecting freedom of speech on campus, including speech they found offensive. The member of Congress questioning then presented several examples of professors removed and conservative speakers denied an opportunity to speak on campus because the school didn’t like their statements or views.

All three should be shown the proverbial door, actually they should be shown the literal door.

Well, the University of Pennsylvania president has now resigned over the backlash. Good.

I am Jewish and a University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) alum. I was disgusted with Magill’s testimony, and I was happy to see her go, along with Chairman Bok. There is a lot of talk about free speech versus hate speech on campus and I am still deeply concerned about a large movement towards more censorship being the answer.

Universities are not good at calling balls and strikes on speech. Harassment, menacing, etc are not protected speech, but if that line is not being crossed, speech needs to be allowed. The universities have found themselves in this situation by moving to a model of preferred speech where they are protecting some groups from speech they view as “dangerous” and letting similar speech be directed at other groups. Viewpoint diversity on campus is dying, much to the detriment of our students.

I recently read The Coddling of the American Mind https://www.amazon.com/Coddling-Amer...5-0b6b1d35d2b4 and they have it nailed. Words are not violence and it is not the role of a university to provide “safe spaces” to keep student from being exposed to ideas that they find objectionable.

I would like to find out what other so-called university presidents have views like this.

Or maybe they will just choose to keep quiet after witnessing this fiasco.

I don’t think the presidents are Jew haters, but, increasingly, they have started boiling every conflict down to a “victim/oppressor” dichotomy and will always take the side of the group they deem victim. They view the victim as the good guy and the oppressor as the bad guy. It lends campus speech to be that of preferred speech, not free speech and does not allow for the type of dialogue that we expect from our institutions of higher learning.

Harvard and UPenn are Ivy League institutions and constantly ranked among the world’s best universities, yet they have fallen deeper into the trap of preferred speech and lack of viewpoint diversity than many others. It’s sad to see, and I hope this is the start of change at UPenn.
