Of course, I'm not answering because you present a false dichotomy, and you know it.

First, plagiarism is not the real issue in Gay's firing (forced resignation). As noted above, the standards for plagiarism vary, esp at the highest academic levels, and the punishment for plagiarizing is different for a master's student as opposed to the president of the world's most prestigious university. Besides, you clearly are aware that the clear reasons for her firing are mainly:

1. DEI. Right-wing wack Bill Ackman crowed about this after Gay stepped down, and he wasn't the only one.

2. Phony antisemitism sideshow. No doubt the 3 prestigious presidents fumbled questions with their lawyer-fueled answers at the Congressional hearing. But these presidents, all women one of whom is African American, should not have been fired for their answers; especially to pious questions from Elise Stefanik, another right-winger who, herself, has cavorted with anti-Semites herself.

Of course, 2 ties directly into 1, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a hard right-winger his/herself ... or is simply very, very naive.

So, they didn’t mean to say what they said?

It was all a show or somebody else was actually pulling the strings?

Interesting theory. It might have some merit.

Anyway, I can see this thread getting closed down for becoming too political.

There's no false dichotomy. So, the standards for plagiarism vary? Really? You're claiming the president of "the world's most prestigious university" should be held to a LOWER standard than a student at Podunk State?

In addition, several loud-mouth conservatives, including the Harvard alum billionaire whose name escapes me, has been crowing Gay had to go because she represents DEI... as if, somehow, this highly accomplished, well peer-review published woman with a Stanford pedigree, was not qualified to helm the most prestigious university in the land (some say, the world). . . . You can hardly get more racist than that.
Has the MIT President been forced to resign? I thought he/she was the last one standing. I think Gay should have resigned after her comments and epic level of plagiarism was exposed - she did that to herself.

Alt-right thinking is unfortunately normalized today.

You are correct; my mistake. Sally Kornbluth is still MIT president.

You are correct. Plagiarism was the catalyst that allowed the Harvard community to see that a third tier researcher and minor intellect was allowed to assume the presidency of one of the most influential institutions in the world.

Seems these well educated people can’t seem to learn from their mistakes and the mistakes of history. It’s one thing to oppose the actions of a nation but it’s another thing to openly publish such trash that should have been left behind in the 1930s and 40s Nazi Germany.

This video from the Columbia University president at Congress is very telling of the state of this, and possibly other major universities. A tenured professor publicly calling out Jewish students in the classroom for verbal attacks or kicking them out of class as well as his public statements in support of the October 7 attacks. This professor also held a high position and the worst that happened to him was a “talking to” and removed from his other position but is still a tenured professor in the classroom.

We needed to have an honest discussion Palestine for decades.

By ignoring the Palestinian situation, these issues has reached a boiling point on both sides.

Neither side is rational anymore. Everyone is too emotional.

You have a congress which is more concerned with reelection and funding than honestly and professors and students who are emotionally overwrought.

It's a bad situation because it's just ramping up the emotions without fixing anything.

If you look at this situation like the Britain/Ireland. The British rules the Irish for hundreds of years as if they were less than human. During that time, the Irish always resisted. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) grew and was dedicated to anti-British imperialism by means of terrorism to achieve the goals of an independent Irish republic. Israel/Palestine is no different!
